I've always thought ceding the concept of patriotism to the right wing to be a huge misstep, because not only does it leave everybody else without a convenient source of cohesive identity but it also removes the opportunity to redirect this sort of messaging

Bit of a PR own goal though as it allows the gammons to claim victimhood; when this happened in Scotland we just reclaimed the message - i.e. we're proud of our flag and the diverse, inclusive, and tolerant country it represents - I think they're still indoors sulking 😆

I feel like b) gets dicey in the modern world - it hits me a bit like admitting fault after a car accident, honorable in theory but in practice results in becoming victimized yourself more often than not, IMO delete the harm for sure but if not truly egregious then after that it's STFU Friday

I -painfully- miss the days when that was still safe, because we also didn't have to tailor even our most trivial opinions to the consensus of a hivemind - today's internet user needs to conduct themselves with the same level of PR strategy as only a major celebrity would have had to in the 90s

It has its redeeming factors, but honestly the idea of juries doesn't entirely sit well with me - in times of knights and kings it made sense, but nowadays it feels perverse to have the most serious crossroads in most people's lives decided by a panel of deliberately unqualified people voting vibes

For consideration: social media sites fail when they reach a critical mass of users and group psychosis sets in — consider pulling the plug on bsky entirely, focusing on atproto, and develop it so that topic based PDSes become the forums of 2025 with their own individual moderation styles etc

In a more general sense, it's almost as if hivemind microblogging is fundamentally toxic to global society and any attempts to mitigate that toxicity are, by definition, doomed to fail

We really need to knock off the political messaging that the only choice is between the most expensive and barely-fit-for-purpose health system in Europe vs the American fuck-you-pay-me model - plenty of EU countries have a public health system that's actually capable of treating in a timely manner
