'Our Blue Peter Advent Crown is extremely simple to make-and if you pack it away carefully, you can use it year after year-provided you renew the candles! Materials: 4 wire coat-hangers 4 tin lids Thin wire Fireproof tinsel and ribbon Gold paint or paper Coloured glass balls 4 candles Framework: 1 The framework of the crown is made in two halves and for each half you need two wire coat-hangers. For the top half, cut the hook off one of the coat-hangers and wire them in position so that they form a cross. 2 The candle holders are made by fixing a small lid on to each of the four corners. We use the lids from salad cream or chutney jars. Pierce a hole in the middle of the lid and in the side. Wire it to the hanger leaving one end of the wire sticking up through the middle of the lid. 3 Wind fireproof tinsel round and round the whole of the frame, including the candle holders, and fix the ends of the tinsel with fuse wire so that they do not unravel. You can use red, green, blue, silver or multicoloured tinsel instead of gold, but it must be fireproof. Cover the bottom of the lids with shiny gold paper. 4 To fix the candles in the holders, spike them on to the wire in the middle of each lid and secure them by filling the edges of the lids with plasticine. Make sure they are so firm that they do not wobble. 5 The bottom half of the frame is made just like the top half, but without the candle holders and with both hooks cut off. After covering it with tinsel, fix it to the top half with wire (pointed end downwards). Decorate with the fireproof ribbon and the coloured glass balls. People find it hard to believe that such a splendid decoration started off as four wire coat-hangers!'

The married woman's problem is the only one which presents any difficulty, for she has to cope with her husband's cards as well as her own. But this isn't really at all complicated once she has mastered the rules which govern card etiquette. When a married woman leaves cards on a married couple who are not at home when she calls, she leaves one of her own and two of her husband's. The idea being that one of her husband's cards is for the lady of the house and one for her husband. But you might ask: Why doesn't the wife also leave two cards? The reason is that "a woman never pays a call on a man" - unless it is purely a business call. Supposing the hostess were at home, you would leave your husband's cards, but not your own - cards represent the person whose name they bear, you see in this case your absent husband, but as you have paid your call in person, there is no need to leave your card as well. If your husband should accompany you on this call and your host and hostess should both be at home, you wouldn't leave any cards at all. If, however, the host were out, your husband would leave one of his cards to show that his call was on the man of the house as well. When your call is on an unmarried woman or a widow, exactly the same rules apply, except that one of your husband's cards would be left instead of two-there being no man for him to call on in this case. If you are calling on a bachelor who has his mother or sister living with him, you leave your cards according to the rules for calling on a married couple. The mother or sister keeping house for a bachelor "leaves cards" for him when she goes calling, as if they were a married couple.'

When you are in a foreign country, do remember that you are, in a small way, an ambassador for your own country. By your courteous (or otherwise) behaviour will your poor countrymen be judged. English people abroad are, unfortunately, so very apt to adopt a haughty, truculent air; to walk about the capitals of Europe in clothes which they would only consider fit for the beach or country lanes at home, and, generally to behave themselves as though all the foreigners with whom they come in contact were either deaf or mentally deficient. Small wonder that in many places abroad we are known as "those mad English," or by other names even more unkind.'

Be pleasant and polite to all your partners - whether they are young and handsome, or elderly and boring! And, whatever you do, don't make the mistake of passing catty or critical remarks about the other dancers, the band, or any of the arrangements. Besides being very bad form, you never know whether remarks of that kind will be overheard or passed on to your hostess - or the person to whom you are talking may turn out to be a relation or intimate friend of the son or daughter of the house!'

Don't let it prevent you from giving a little dinner party should you have no maid to wait at table. There' s no reason why it shouldn't go off without a hitch if you keep all the arrangements very simple, and remember one or two special points. Don't attempt many courses. Have everything cold, or at most one hot course, such as a roast or poultry. You will find it very much easier to have grapefruit or something of the kind as a first course, which can be placed ready on the table. If you want a fish course, why not have a cold fish salad, or, say, salmon mayonnaise?'
