“Spirit of Beyond: The Shiant Isles” pub. 2021
This afternoon, as I was checking on the Croft’s trees in advance of #stormamy, the sound of the peaty torrent cascading through our little waterfall drew me down to it.

Mackerel, caught by lovely friends and dropped off to us late yesterday, on the menu for supper this evening. Smoked by us today 🧡.

A breathtaking end to a glorious harvest day here.

Storm Floris here today. Rather terrifying, at times. A neighbour just down the road recorded a 91 mph gust!

The Shiants from the Croft, yesterday - summery hues and just beyond the pale.

Over The Minch, the most extraordinary light and cloud, with fingers of mist over the Hebrides.
July 21, 2025 at 6:09 AM
The past week has gifted us some amazing cloud dancing, with plenty of mist and haar over the Hebrides (as well as here) and some exceptional Fata Morgana. The Shiants looked pale but brooding a couple of nights ago, under a hovering sea mist.

Over The Minch this evening, looking across the dunes from an upstairs window. It’s been a muggy day here and the “heatwave” is due tomorrow. 3 whole days of summer temps, bring it on!!

All hands on deck! This coming week is Install Week as we hang the vibrant and exciting Summer Exhibition of work by members of the RSW at Gairloch Museum.
It’s a huge honour to be hosting this here in Gairloch and I’m thrilled to have been involved with the planning.

My view of An Cliseam on Isle of Harris last night, before sunset. Happy Solstice, everyone.

In the garden, so many wonders, if you look closely, right now. Food for the soul.

Just look at that! The most incredible fata morgana in the heat, late this afternoon, looking out over the Minch to Eilean Trodday and South Harris. One of the best I've seen here.

At the day’s end.

It may feel like winter again out there today, but there are bluebells!!

Oh, what a day.

Quite possibly my all-time favourite Scottish hill. Suilven, looking as mythical and mysterious as ever. It’s been ages (far too long!) since we’ve been up here in Assynt and I’d almost forgotten what a powerful landscape this is.

A late afternoon stroll down the lane. Savouring a golden hour.

As I returned home from the village and reached the top of the hill above home, this is the sight which greeted me, out there over the Inner Sound. Isle of Rona and Skye beyond.
February 27, 2025 at 9:21 PM
On returning from this afternoon's walkies, we were chatting to a neighbour and her dog at the top of the dunes and this was what we saw, glancing out over the water, towards Skye. It was breathtaking.

An icy Loch Airigh Uillem, nestled in the low hills behind the Croft this afternoon, with Baosbheinn and the Torridon hills beyond. We shot this with the help of our winged friend “Max”, from our back field. An absolutely cracking day for February, with a few more forecast to come! 🤞💙

As I was at the kitchen window, I just happened to glimpse and catch a dramatic chink of light on Slioch, late this afternoon as the sun was sinking behind Skye.

That's how the light gets in.”

Not long after sunset, this evening, looking from the house, and over the dunes and sea to Skye.
February 7, 2025 at 9:14 PM
The moon over Skye and the Inner Sound, at a few minutes past ten, from an upstairs window.

One of my favourite places to sit - by the stream, as it gurgles its way into our back Croft, from the hill loch above us.
In the warming sun, it really seemed as if spring will be here before long. This is a dark winter for many, in so many ways, but I’m hopeful as we move into February.

From the hill above our little community this afternoon, this was the great beast of a cloud which had pummelled us with hail stones just minutes before, heading towards the Torridons and Baosbheinn.
