I'm a professor at the flagship university for the fourth whitest state in the US. Over 80% of our students are white.

The biggest barrier to access here is that due to lack of state funding, we have top 10 highest tuition per capita of public unis in the country.

We also have a food pantry.

If you do basic needs work in higher education, you quickly come to realize how fucked the fundamentals of the economy are... particularly for young adults

The Word Games That Enable Medicaid Cuts
We don’t call it Medicaid in many states, and we use euphemisms for what are in reality cuts. That endangers the system, a health care regulator writes.

Strongly suggest this read, we have been doing social work ed a disservice for so long. If now is not the time to redirect our curricula, then when?

“if we take seriously our stated commitment to social justice...full-spectrum education isn’t just pedagogically practical – it’s a moral imperative.”
In this new piece, I reflect & invite your thoughts on the urgent need to reclaim full-spectrum, not methodologically siloed, MSW education. I share ideas and models already in use, explore barriers to doing this work, and invite an exchange about what’s working in your own SW training experiences.
Re-Embracing Full Spectrum MSW Education: Responding to Crisis by Returning to Our Roots
With the close of this academic year, I’ve been reflecting on what makes social work not only distinct but urgently essential, especially now. In earlier posts, I shared thoughts on how our field uniq...

Nearly nothing makes me roll my eyes more than an academic listing their annual accomplishments. Buuuut I am 37 weeks pregnant, in “early labor,” and still exercising, teaching, nesting, and moving projects forward. Pregnant people are amazing. Cis men could NEVER.

I’m very proud of this point-counterpoint between me and Jessica Pryce. The papers give a good understanding of our very different views of this system and where our efforts should be focused. Plus, all of the articles in this issue are open access through the summer!

THEY HAVE DEPORTED A TWO YEAR OLD CHILD BIRTHRIGHT CITIZEN

This is why I have no patience anymore for people playing games with this stuff.
NEW: A federal judge raised alarm Friday that the Trump administration appeared to have deported a 2-year-old U.S. citizen to Honduras with "no meaningful process" — even as her father was fighting to keep her in the country.

(One of) the latest 4-alarm fires for higher ed. Social work, accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, needs to GET ON THIS. Thoughts, @cswe.bsky.social? And SW faculty followers? NADD members?
Trump’s goal is to manipulate accreditors to force colleges and universities to do his bidding & punish them when they resist. He is weaponizing the accreditation process. This order is another example of the Trump administration’s attempts to control higher education. @aaup.bsky.social @aft.org

Harvard has a multi step plan for fighting back! Every university should develop one so they don’t comply!
This should be the template for every university’s website: let the public know what they gain from research and what they stand to lose.
