Contributed to this piece in Cancer Discovery on the new NIH organoid effort. Amid all uncertainty, good to see real commitment to human models and standards. Organoids are central to how we study disease and test therapies- it is about time the system reflects it

This study builds on our unpassaged (or passage zero) paradigm yet extends it to include not only short term (6 days) cultures, but also long term (one month) and short term cultures grown in hypoxia.

I have not been around much over the past month, so let's talk what I have been up to... mostly travel! And yes, despite everything else swirling around, science, when it’s sharp, generous, and moving forward, is still unmatched joy 🧵

Spent about 20 hours in Rome visiting the Pediatric Hospital Bambino Gesù, engaging with Dr. Locatelli and his terrific team on rare sarcoma therapies. Amazing science, outstanding food and, well, Rome is always worth spending a little time in, no matter how tired or jet-lagged..

While I am so very sad to be missing this year's AACR Annual Meeting in Chicago, we have a fantastic contingent representing the lab! #AACR25 /n

Has been tough folks, at many levels, no two ways about it. But the science has been so fantastic - some great progress in lab, exciting papers coming along, awesome new discoveries and novel platforms, fantastic meetings that brought about new and exciting collaborations.

Things are tough all around, don't get me wrong. Yet, I just spent the better part of a week in Boston focused on precision medicine #AACRprecmed25 and feel so recharged. The ongoing research holds such incredible promise for both rare and common cancers. If only the grip on the NIH would loosen..

Now @michaelhoffman.bsky.social starting his talk on inferring transcription factor binding from different data modalities. Loved the reference to Cunningham’s law #AACRprecmed25

Such an interesting talk from Dr. Eisfeld. These inclusive studies highlight critical genomic differences that may eventually impact care and are so so important - we need more of these and bigger cohorts, not fewer. #AACRPM25

This first AACR meeting on functional and genomic precision medicine has officially started! Dr. Mardis gave the introductory remarks followed by our first plenary speaker, Dr. Flaherty, who will focus on the collision of genomic and functional precision medicine #AACRPM25

Every session listed as starting on 02/25 has a * which indicates "* Denotes this meeting did not take place as scheduled".
Also, none of them is on the Federal Register thus they literally cannot take place.

Trying to get a badge 10 minutes after registration closure (LA traffic for you..) and got asked three times if I am at the right conference. Person at the desk was not convinced that I am chairing a session shortly 😂
Am I at the right conference?? lol

For context, we are now surrounded by 4 poorly/not controlled wildfires. The air is heavy, the situation unprecedented and the destruction unimaginable in Los Angeles. We are all one global warming-fueled disaster away from becoming climate refugees.

I need a version of the serenity prayer but for daycare rules. On a related note, I gained one very messy but plenty cute office mate for the day.

Speaking of importing timelines, here's an oldie but goodie: a view of a patient-derived tumor organoid leveraging some of the new methods we are developing. Something amazing they are, organoids.
