Family first, understanding reality at its most fundamental second. Also sports and good food.

In my day job I study the structure of brains in beings, and the structure of beings with brains.
Work closely with scientist, take inspiration from artist, and be bold/think big; dare to break new ground on age old questions using our latest knowledge rather than commenting on the philosophy of the past.

Also enjoy the ride, it probably won't last for ever!

These are among the questions we think could help move the science of consciousness forwards. In particular, we hope your contributions will help us move away from common (and often simplistic) assumptions about what experiences are like in altered states. Looking forward to your contribution!

Are dreams in REM different from those during ketamine anesthesia? what neural mechanisms can account for those differences? What should we believe about experiences people report from NREM and deep propofol sedation? What do theories predict about how experiences differ between psilocybin vs DMT?

Colleagues and I are happy to edit a research topic with Frontiers that aims to tackle this knowledge gap. Do you (or someone you know) have research or perspectives that could contribute? Have a look here:

Frontiers | Comparing Altered States of Consciousness: Phenomenology, Physiology, and Neural Mechanisms
While research on altered states of consciousness has made considerable progress, much of the existing literature compares these states only to normative wak...

Wow! What a fantastic lineup of contributions. Congratulations!

Just to clarify: do you think external states (eg photon wavelengths hitting the twins) matter for anything except "veridicality" or something of the sort, when explaining why a perceptual experience appears the way it does (eg it has the color red in it) for a subject?

Great! This is exactly the kind of view that I suspected exists out there among my peers, and that I can't wrap my head around properly. I'll work harder on getting it!
Thanks for sharing 😊

Looking fused to seeing who else shares this!

That said, I read it as formulated that way (ie waking experiences are like externally driven dreams) for some rhetoric punch. But I don't see the meaning essentially changing of the order was reversed; dreams are like waking experiences driven from within the body/brain.

Thanks!
The way I understand the analogy is that the full content of an experience, be it in a dream or perception, can be fully explained by reference to properties of the brain (ie without reference to anything outside the skin)—it is not supposed to be a "one way" analogy, so to speak.

Nice piece! I think I agree with it

Right now, I feel we are sacrificing Ukrainians (and Russians and north Koreans too btw) while standing at a safe distance cheering them on and collecting righteousness points. It's morbid and disgusting in my view. An extreme version of Facebook activism...
