A hapless tax collector finds himself in a haunted temple where he encounters zombies, demons, a grumpy Taoist swordsman, and the most beautiful ghost in movie history.

My favorite Hong Kong movie of the 1980s. Pure magic.
This promotional artwork for A Chinese Ghost Story features the two leads, Leslie Cheung and Joey Wong in costume surrounded by a lot of lettering, and it does little to convey the artistry, humor, and emotion of a a brilliant film. Actress Joey Wong in an iconic shot from the film when we first get a look at the titular ghost as she drifts backward into the night . Leslie Cheung's hapless hero makes his way through the haunted forest with only a paper lantern.

The stone ruin on the right echoes the cliff on the left, and the ruins together are mere echoes of past human presence. #hiking
Looking up toward a cliff approximately 50 feet tall. Echoing the cliff picture, here's a shot of an old stone ruin in the forest covered with graffiti. A lazy river winds through a forest under a vivid blue sky. A stone pillar is all that's left of bridge that once crossed the river from which the pillar rises. Whatever civilization existed back here in the forest has long since vanished.

As a non-glamorous person with an Old Navy fashion sense, I don't know much about Glamour magazine. However, I doubt the US edition has ever done anything as cool as Glamour Mexico did in naming hard rock power trio #TheWarning Women of the Year for 2025.

I'm not sure the origin of this artwork for the film Ilsa, She Wolf of the S.S., which features the titular character, played by Dyanne Thorne, in her Nazi uniform over a plain white background. The actual theatrical poster has Ilsa standing in front of a large swastika, but I thought that might trigger Bluesky moderators to remove it. Remember kids, it's only a movie.

The ruins of an old stone fireplace stand along in the forest. A wider shot of the same fireplace shows stone blocks covered in weeds. I assume these blocks were once support elements for a small house or cabin. In contrast to the stone ruins, this lean-to made of sticks and leaves won't leave much of a time stamp, but it makes for a nice shot all the same.

Coralie Fargeat doesn't necessarily reinvent the rape-revenge film with her debut feature, but she brings flair and highly stylized visuals to a genre that generally aims for gritty realism.

It may be the goriest of its kind as well.

This pond, accessible only by foot after a 1,100-foot climb, is one of my favorite hiking destinations in NJ.

However, F**K THESE ROCKS!

Seriously, it's a beautiful and fun trail segment, but I'm getting to old to deal with these ankle twisters.
All four images show scenes from the trail that wraps along the western edge of the pond, which is lovely but consists solely of large, jagged rocks and boulders with no flat places to step. Hikers have to hop from rock to rock to get from one side of the pond to the other.

Today's trail pics 2 - This one in the upper left looks like a designed garden or even a movie set. It's not. Nature did that.

Yeah, our "mountains" in the northeast might be glorified hills, but until you've hiked on exposed bedrock for 4 hours straight, you don't know what it does to your knees and ankles.

These are from yesterday (August 31).
All four images contained in this post show craggy, cracked stretches of bedrock pitched this way and that along the ridgeline of a low-elevation mountain range. The traction it provides in dry weather is fantastic, but all that friction takes a toll on one's joints. Also, the trail is never level from side to side, so one leg is always extending while the other is bending as one walks.
