German animal names are a delight that manage what I've always thought of as a unique sort of prosaic whimsicality: Stinktier, Gürteltier, Faultier, Trampeltier, Pantoffeltierchen, usw. usw. "Beutelteufel", "Nasenbeutler" and "Kurzschnabel-Ameisenigel" are probably my favorite Australian ones.
