Found at 8:23 pm on Sept. 28 on Alejandro Kirk's Wikipedia entry. You know it's gonna get removed as the baseball obsessives scour everything for clinical rigor, but in the meantime, let's enjoy life's little editorial grand slams. #bluejays #toronto #kirk #grandslam

Fires have started in Nova Scotia. Painful memories from 2023. Many friends and family in the area. Besides COVID, few things have united Canadians in the 2020s, from coast to coast, like wildfires. It's not synchronicity -- it's an actual pattern.

I'm in awe at Valerie Bauerlein's "The Devil at His Elbow". As a true crime fan (I'm basic; don't judge), I was familiar with the Murdaugh saga; had seen the Netflix specials, etc. But this book is on a whole other level. Meticulous, Gothic, relentless. Author as True Detective, not law enforcement.

Bless the Park Attendant and his Water. Bless that he gets breaks in the shade. May his chemicals cleanse the pool. May he keep the wading for his People, Ages 0-12.

It might be fashionable to dislike mothers in law, but when your Chinese MIL makes you a ready supply of homemade jiaozi for on-demand lunches, you remain eminently unfashionable.

Yes, it's a new era of product licensing, and SEO is a critical tool in that consolidation of meanings. Hasbro, for example, is starting to do this with their D&D line. "Beholder" will now typically return the monster.

Toronto doesn't muck about when the sun comes out. We roll to the occasion.

As part of my quarterly existential crisis, I got hung up on my bad habits that could also be considered good habits. This is one of the takeaways from my notes.

Chaperoning my twins' SK class on a field trip today. 10 mins into the bus ride and the carsick cascades have begun. I have under-caffeinated for these circumstances.

Taylor Creek ravine in East York, Toronto. Never take these spaces for granted. They are a joy to young kids growing up in the concrete jungle.

Yadda yadda a few steps, Alcatraz is rebuilt, and Forgotten Man Feels Listened To. It's the Pepe Silvia Theory of Where the Mail Went, except of instead of a couple of buffoons in the basement, it's a bunch of Heritage Foundation interns chatting about how to dismantle the Fed. Reserve on Discord.

More so than the aggregated loss of knowledge that this will incur, I am struck by the solipsism of these moves. As an inoculation against religious self-centeredness, Hitchens once told a debate opponent, "the galaxies are not arranged with you in mind." Nationalism merits a narrowing, a slow wilt.

Downtown Toronto in a quietly cathartic mood this Good Friday. Busy busy. You get the feeling of retail therapy in the air.

5yo daughter in front of mural painted by her and a half-dozen selected "artists" from SK and grades 1 & 2. She recited all their names, and I remarked on how talented they all were. Her response: "Yeah, and there were also some boys there."

Chris Donovan's series in the NYTimes and Macleans continue to generate controversy in my hometown (current and former residents alike). I love where I grew up, but NB consistently ranks at or near the bottom in Canada for family income. Life is hard there for many.

My 5-year-old daughter is a prolific doodler. She accomplishes this amidst the maelstrom of a senior kindergarten class. She brings home wads of these sketches every day, crumpled and forgotten.
