One of my favourite formats of visual jokes. Everything relies on the final expression.

Man, Pixar's 'Luca' is good. Very pleasant surprise, up there with Pixar's best (e.g. Toy Story 2, Coco) for me. Not as melodramatic & flashy as some, but I am WEARY of that. Great characters, genuine emotion, specific evocative detail, visual whimsy - charming, understated, lovely.

Read my little haul from last Sunday. Absolutely quality gear all the way, delightful.

People of Tyneside: How'd you like your week to end with some good raucous soul music for good people? NORTH SHIELDS FISH QUAY, 10mins from Tynemouth metro, free in, good beer. TOMORROW 7-11pm

Anyone into postmodern noir I think may enjoy The Kid Detective (streaming on Channel4). Mostly played as wryly comic pastiche serving the theme of lost youth and squandered potential, but actually quite effective as noir in its own right. Bit tonally clashing at times, but I think that's the point.

Seeking interesting horror this October? The Vourdalak (streaming on Channel 4) is good. Historical, dreamlike, folky, retro but innovative, gloomy but moments of humour, stuff to say about repression, patriarchy, love. Adapted from a pre-Stoker vampire story. A bit slow-paced but worth its <90mins.

Yoooo, people of Tyneside, get on the case! New local writing! Poetry! Short stories! Varied, quality stuff! Hear readings and be one of the first humans to own this collection!

I don't post much but am mildly obsessed with #FPL.

This is my team; solid start so far. Salah, Haaland, defcon value mids.

Last season I chased team value (quite successfully) but plan to buy Haaland for backend of season turned out bad, so am going for more careful transfers this time.

The Prohibition Cabaret Bar is closing. Amazing venue, will be missed, am genuinely sad.
1) They're auctioning off their cool stuff! prohibitionbar.co.uk/auction-items/
2) I'm DJing one last party on Saturday - soulful, raucous Prohibition-style tunes. See prohibitionbar.co.uk/whats-on/ for info!

The Phoenician Scheme: is good (in the usual way I like stuff). Continues great current run of Wes Anderson (French Dispatch, Asteroid City). Inventive, whimsical, baffling, symmetrical, etc: yes. Too hyper-stylised to easily emotionally connect to, but with moments of genuine pathos: yes.

Very sad that Newcastle's Prohibition Cabaret Bar is closing (end of July).

Over the last year and a bit, me and some pals put on a few parties there - each one with an elaborate high-concept (theme/costume/decorations and music), with entry just donations for charity.... (1/2)

The Ballad of Wallis Island is GREAT, strong recommend. Funny, poignant, understated, has stuff to say about the passage of time & processing emotions, but also art (specifically music) & who it's for (artist vs audience). Is my exact kind of thing, but not even 4-star, I'm calling 5-star. Great.

Just come across a WEBSITE where there is a QR CODE IMAGE that points to the ticketing site BUT NO ACTUAL HYPERLINK OR URL ANYWHERE.

Because of facebook etc taking over everything have people forgotten what websites actually do????

Anyone remember the Newcastle local music scene of mid-00s? I've been digging through old CDs and found three compilations from Hipster Deathkill 3000/Vortex Pop - but no track names! Found deets for these two on Wayback Machine but 'View To A Deathkill' eludes me (for now! - any tips appreciated!)

Do you like the authentic voices of local creative scenes? Ofc you do. North Tyneside Writers' Circle have put out two excellent anthologies of prose & poetry featuring loads of North East writers - you can get them in print or ebook format here: mybook.to/NTWCAnthologies (free on Kindle Unlimited!)

GW25 benching thoughts anyone? Kerkez vs Munoz but mainly who to bench in attack. Seems mad to compare MCI(A) & EVE(H) but genuinely not sure which is more appealing (Mbeumo & Palmer surely fixture-proof & decent fixtures anyway, can't bench doublers or attacker vs SOU so am in a quandary) #FPL

Feels a bit disingenuously self-depreciating - much of your work has (good!) social commentary that you presumably *want* people to take a bit seriously? Humour has power?

And, I dunno, "it's just silly jokes" gets used to excuse some of the worst punching-down 'humour' around...

How was I unfamiliar with this 1992 banger till picking it up in a charity shop yesterday?? I'd mostly associated BNH with later poppier stuff. Great funk & varied rap flow. I'm not most knowledgeable about hip hop, but if you enjoy stuff like DJ Format and Jurassic 5, it's a strong recommend!

They said it couldn't be done, but IT COULD. @paperjamcc.bsky.social have made TWO anthologies in 2024! This one (all ages, actually fun), THE GREAT JAM PARADE ...AND THAT, launches on Saturday 11am-3pm at Newcastle City Library! Come along for drawing games and general good vibes!
