The paper is about understanding clinical presentations of disorder. Autism, as you suggest, is not a disorder. This is a point we endeavour to make clear in the paper and associated work — eg:

Thanks. Steve and I are thinking of writing a 20-year retrospective to reflect on the study’s lessons—for leadership, tyranny and health. Our sense is that they’re all still very relevant.

The talk has particular significance for me because it was at SASP in 1987 at ANU that I gave my first ever conference talk. I also have many happy memories of working at ANU in the 1990s — in an outstanding team of researchers led by John Turner.
