The fact that a lot of people WANT it to be true that poverty leads to fascism is the reason we should be skeptical of that idea.

"People vote for fascism because they're poor" - and work backwards to search for evidence of this, and that's why you get people saying that workers making over $150K/year who say they voted for Trump to be allowed to use slurs again are actually secretly poor.

Centrists and leftists both love the idea that fascism arises from economic hardship because it makes it make sense and, particularly in the US, economic issues are considered politically legible in a way that other issues are not. So they start with the conclusion -
