As you can see, Cloud Dancer is the color of a MacBook charger in its waning days of service. The color of bad news delivered with bureaucratic indifference. The color of congressional insider trading. The color of a person’s thoughts while ignoring war. 💯 #pantone

Have been a Grady Hendrix fan for a long while and this book is no exception. It is a departure from the gripping horror of his other books because its purpose is to tell a story we never read - of the hidden homes for pregnant teen girls before Roe v. Wade. With a bit of magic thrown in.

I feel both susceptible to this need for validation and endlessly exhausted by it, particularly in the world of work. Having to encourage people to solve problems that are theirs to solve as regular course of work and not as an over and above job function that will earn them praise is a drain.

I can't stop thinking about this book for a lot of reasons but even the epigraph is seared into me.

"The real hell of life is everyone has their reasons." - Jean Renoir

It's about the power of a life giving friendship and how we hurt the people we love to stay who we believe ourselves to be.

A fast-paced and fashionable heist that errs just enough towards dystopia that it's deceptively eerie. A Very Good Book ™️.
The Payback is out today, and you can buy it wherever books are sold. It comes highly recommended by Publishers Weekly, Booklist, The Boston Globe, Vanity Fair, the LA Times, the NYT, and dozens of people who hang out on this very website.

"This does not mean that we are in a hopeless situation. It does, however, mean that we must adjust our interpretation of the world, or be left behind. We must see things not for what we wish they were, or for what they used to be, but for what they are."

When Putin invaded Ukraine I knew it would give Trump ideas about Canada. I don't think he's joking. I think this is how his brain works: What is the point of having more weapons and money than everyone else if you don't use them to get even more?
It's really about claiming the right to assert raw power at every single level: economically, militarily and inside the family. It's mass social engineering.

This brings us to the concept of chosenness, which is at the dead centre of this admin -from the tech oligarchs to the white nationalists.
