The world might be stupid but there are still amazing things and people in it. I went to a dia de los muertos celebration last night and there was a tremendous amount of music, color, and joy. Traditions and culture are important.

Being at my folks means being able to play my grandfathers banjo. I miss it when I’m not around.

Then the company sent me this satisfaction survey about calling their call center to tell them I was stuck in an elevator

Made sure to capture the moment when he door opened. Who knows when I’ll next have this experience!

Today in unhelpful AI

I am currently stuck in a malfunctioning elevator at a storage unit place. Used the emergency phone, then tried to call the office here.

The helpful AI assistant put me on hold when I told it I was stuck in an elevator.

Trying to make some graphics to help describe what goes into "teaching a lesson". Its not perfect because everything interacts and is less linear of course. Do you see anything you'd add? Take away? Re-order?

It’s hard to be here and know that there is an active coup happening. Everyone is still going to class and taking the bus instead of screaming and marching. It feels surreal.

This was the best dollar I have spent in probably 2 decades.

Instant favorite.

Gilbert Ryle telling us that thinking isn’t thinking only when it’s done invisibly, and that an absence of visibility effort (or even a thoughtful look) doesn’t mean thinking is happening.

If people only understand value in terms of commodification and exploitation you can only express value in terms of commodification or exploitation.

Music education as "workforce development" is a great example. Here's two recent examples one from In Tune Magazine and one from NAfME.

Hot #MusEd take: we should be having that debate scholastic published in our 101 classes. We could even use that piece as a starting point. Both students articulate main points in this historically ongoing conversation pretty succinctly.

Reasons not to fund school music programs from 1921: Musicians are people who have poor morals and aren't fit for citizenship, why would we want to train more of them?!

Just got this message this morning. Looking forward to presenting ways to start songwriting in general music classes at the Arizona MEA conference.

So I see lots of affirming Music Ed. posts about how the band room was a lifeline and how many people felt belonging there. Folks don't often talk about the musicians that are kept out.

Read this awesome piece by Heidi Maria Westerlund :" The return of moral questions: expanding social epistemology in music education in a time of super-diversity"

She delivers an awesome examination of the epistemic roots of music education and makes a case for needed change. Get into it!
