Tonight, we screened Sir Steve McQueen's grinding, incandescent masterpiece: 'Mangrove' (2020). A film about Black self-representation, in both a legal and artistic sense; whose visual grammar returns constantly to apertures, lenses, gaps, and the margin.

I screened Gregory Doran's 2019 RSC Measure for Measure this evening for my Law and Lit students. Gripping performances by a darting, wry, self-impressed Duke (Antony Byrne) and a truly incredulous Isabella (Lucy Phelps) lowered scene-by-scene into a lake of grief. (P: Helen Maybanks)

First full book of the year: Stephen Alford's admirable and admiring biography of Robert Cecil. As one would expect from Alford's back-catalogue, very strong on Burghley, espionage, and diplomacy. The style is light and imaginative, behind which lies a wealth of primary source endnotes.
