"Are ghost candles a fire hazard?"

Is that a real candle that looks like a ghost or a candle in another plane of existence that looks like a ghost and was lit by a ghost or did the ghost light a real candle in our plane of existence and the appearance of the candle is irrelevant. Help us help you.

Hot take: we overestimate what actual intelligence is.
"A battle I've already lost is that we shouldn't call LLMs "AI" at all; they are machine learning and not the general intelligence that is implied to the layman by the name."

Couldn't agree more.

I loathe the term "AI" with a passion and wish we could refer to them just as "LLMs".

I’m suspicious of how the conversation keeps getting redirected to the data users are giving to TikTok and not the ability of TikTok to wield influence over political discourse.
The energy on TikTok is like, I’d rather give an explicitly Chinese app all my personal information than go anywhere near Meta.

You love to see it 🙌🏼

I always appreciate when this point is raised because it is often lost. And it is important to educate folks on this because otherwise they lose trust when the “truth” changes.
I appreciate the preference for science, but to clarify: science makes predictions based on experimental data. There’s no “truth” involved. It’s only “to the best of our knowledge so far”.

Okay, I need to set up some centralized monitoring of some home servers. Back in the day I would have reached for Nagios. Is there anything better for a home lab these days? #homelab

Wait so is Peppa Pig a cubist rendering of a pig?

(For real the Peppa Pig toys are so weird because there is no way to make a 3D toy that looks like the cartoon.)

Seriously considering a Lemur Pro from System 76.

Anyone have anything good or bad to say about it?

There are two voices inside me.

One says: “Remember the teaching that all phenomena are fundamentally unsatisfying”

The other says: “It’s been 10 years. Just buy yourself a new laptop. You’re a software engineer. It’s okay to have new tools.”

Every time someone talks about how public wifi is safe to use without a VPN due to things like HTTPS and HSTS, some random person replies with "man-in-the-middle attack" because they don't actually know what that is, and therefore don't understand that HTTPS and HSTS address specifically that.

Amazon corporate IT still requires it for their ~1M users because of various legacy systems. If Amazon are representative of big users then I guess the answer is unfortunately: most of their customers still need it, and making it default is less work.

I saw Marcus Eaton and the Lobby open for Train. Liked them a lot more than Train.
Unpopular opinion: People listing the first band they saw in concert should name the opening act for the first band they saw in concert, assuming they arrived on time for that.

Every time I visit family and they’re watching cable tv…the ads are horrifying. People have become numb to the garbage they sit through.

Bonus: my kid gets mad and actually refuses to watch anything on cable.
