"He essentially said, 'I’m not going to hide who I am to make you comfortable.' In doing so Mamdani delivered a raciolinguistic reality check that refuses the idea that politicians of color need to translate themselves into whiteness to be viable."

Zohran Mamdani Just Gave American Politics a Raciolinguistic Reality Check
Zohran Mamdani just won the New York City mayoral race, and it’s a big deal for reasons that will no doubt be dissected for years to come. But what really stands out to me is how this moment shifts…

“So yes—when Bad Bunny takes that stage, we’ll celebrate him. We’ll defend Title III. We’ll keep teaching, organizing, and speaking out. But more than that, we’ll keep listening for the world we’re fighting for—the one that sounds like music, laughter, and a thousand accents refusing to disappear.”

When I met Ryan Coogler several years ago, we were standing in a group of people chatting, when a woman with visible hearing aids walked up, and he casually began to sign the whole conversation so she could participate. She mouthed “thank you”. He nodded and just kept doing his thing.

I may be biased but this looks like a great special issue that people should consider contributing to 🤗
#literacies friends, English in Texas wants your research and practice pieces for their Fall/Winter issue! Manuscripts should take up @nelsonlflores.bsky.social's language architecture as an organizing concept. Check out the call for more ideas and nudges. Manuscripts are due Sept 1.

Just completed our Critical Conversations Book Club (led by @kelleeey.bsky.social, supported by UC Irvine’s School of Education) on “Becoming the System” by @nelsonlflores.bsky.social. What a great way to cap off this book club by engaging in conversation with Dr. Flores about his book! 👏🏽📚🗣️

“There is no reason to believe that any nonstandard vernacular is in itself an obstacle to learning. The chief problem is ignorance of language on the part of all concerned. Our job as linguists is to remedy this ignorance.”-Labov, in 1972.

William Labov, Who Studied How Society Shapes Language, Dies at 97
He laid the foundation for sociolinguistics, and he showed that structures like class and race shaped speech as much as where someone lives.

Jonathan Rosa and I had the amazing opportunity to work with an undergraduate student and a high school student to "translate" our "Undoing Appropriateness" article for high school students. The final product is available for free here:

Language is Not the Problem, Racism is the Problem – Demystifying Language Project
Students of color are always being told that they need to change the way they speak. But what if, instead, educators changed the way they listen?

People are talking about echo chambers again, so here's my model. 🧵

There are three groups of people.
1. People we agree with (Enjoy them.)
2. People we can have interesting disagreements with (Learn from them.)
3. Bad people with bad views (Mute or block them with gay abandon.)
