Anyways I did not go to art school and have never really known a name for this skill, but now you know it's a thing, and maybe it can help you create more interesting pieces.
It doesn't always have to be "cool character standing in a void", unless that's what the piece requires.

It's a really weird skill that I only really started to learn when working on larger projects where my art was only one part of the project, and the limitations derived from it not only did not make my work harder, they made it SO MUCH EASIER, it took away a lot of the guesswork, specially in comp

Besides all this, each "genre" of work has a general "look" to it. A style of sorts derived from both necessity and convention, you don't need to follow these, but you need to be aware of when you are breaking them and why.

Even "stand alone" work needs this consideration. Are you doing a print? How does it look from a distance? Are you using the entire canvas? Do you have a frame? If it's a single image, you cannot tell half a story, if it's a set, how do they look together?

Is your work an interior illustration? How big is the space? What does the text around it say? Are the colours print friendly? Is the comp properly balanced for its place in the page?

The other half is considering how your work exists within its environment.
We kinda know this with concept art, and how super tight rendering is secondary to clarity and consistency in communicating the idea, but it applies to all sorts of things.

Ugh, yeah, idk why people do that. Like they expect you to give them a little piece of paper saying "my friend is (insert minority group) and they say it's ok" so they can flash it whenever they face criticism
It sucks so bad, sorry you had to go through that ❤️🩹

As a fellow non spooky queer who has to be very careful with screens this time of year, I wish nothing but the coziest night to you both 💚
