Neither gives nor expects follows back.

NFFC, pub milhist, 5-string fretless, bikes, trans rights are human rights
FFS, screwed up the threading and can't count, so that should be 4/4 and this is 5/5. But anyway, you get the idea.

In 1939, a family man at the very top end of the callup age, he very hastily learnt to swim and joined the ranks of the dock police instead, spending the war in Bristol and Avonmouth, being bombed and telling American sailors to turn those bloody lights out. 3/3

For additional evidence, I'm assuming these were badges from his school cadet corps uniform (he was at Haberdashers' Askes Hatcham, that being the family trade). I think there are certificates from that somewhere too.

There is no collective family recollection of my grandfather serving (but we were deeply anti-militarist and it wouldn't have come up casually) and he was only born in 1902, so the guess is that he might have just caught the very end of the postwar call-up (1920) and then been demobbed soon after.

They're not as bad as Derby back then, but they're also facing stronger opposition.

I was annoyed with only two lines of ⬜🟩🟩🟩🟩 before I got it, but that is really quite special. Chapeau.

I can get behind Sailing By becoming an anthem for the resistance, though.

It's a mystery, as is how the Norwegians manage to speak the same language while using sounds that the human ear can actually distinguish.

Ten years living in Belgium, 22 since we came back to the UK, and the cupboard under the stairs is still the buanderie.

I did the Guardian cryptic every day for years, until I did an Italian degree, which destroyed (or at least overloaded) all the linguistic lateral thinking capacity required.

Danish only has two phonemes, a schwa and a uvular fricative. Nonetheless, it is impossible for foreigners to learn to pronounce it in a way that Danes won't laugh at.

It would be a terrible shame if some pool 4 clogger of a defender were to break both his ankles in their opener now, wouldn't it?

Without looking (I'm procrastinating from a deadline, but not that much) I'm assuming it doesn't have Totò al Giro d'Italia in it, and can thus safely be ignored.

We should be allowed to be smug, as it's a core element of our national culture, and we we've had more practice at it than most countries.

(Likewise for sarcasm)

In the 1970s it was cheaper to get stoned than pissed, too. Even with minimal enforcement of drinking laws.

Remember seeing her on the slip on the Clyde when I was a kid, quite a sight. But these tower block barges are just hideous.
