Does anybody know what this is? Found it digging in my garden in SE London. Feels like it goes about 40cm below ground, but there's something else at the bottom because I can't pull it out.
Long metal spike in the ground about 2cm wide and 60cm long, with a wick like a candle at the top.

The River Ravensbourne in Lewisham, London. Astonishingly just 15 years ago it was in a dirty concrete culvert, but was re-meandered with the help of a EU grant.

Wrote to my MP - text of letter in ALT text if anyone wants to adapt it to their country/representative.
I am writing to ask you to request the government to step up UK support for Ukraine's civil initiatives. As I'm sure you're aware, last week the US State Department issued a directive to freeze foreign aid programmes for 90 days. USAID’s office in Ukraine has been ordered to halt all projects, Ukraine’s Veteran Hub support line had to shut down, and other vital initiatives, such as school and hospital support, rebuilding, and energy programs, are at risk of being disrupted. For this vital support to continue, it is imperative that the UK and Ukraine's allies step in to bridge the gap. As Scott McDonald, Chief Executive of the British Council, recently wrote in a letter to the Guardian, "The announcement of the 100-year partnership between Ukraine and the UK is hugely welcome. A critical aspect of this war, we must not forget, is its daily and long-term impact on the Ukrainian people, their cultural sector, education and way of life." Please urge the government to offer emergency additional funding to support the British Council and other UK institutions who have been steadfastly supporting Ukraine's civil life. Where possible, we should also do our utmost to support those projects that have been curtailed by the withdrawal of US financing. If the UK can lead in showing solidarity with Ukraine, it will encourage Ukraine's many other allies to do the same, and the effects of the US funding freeze can be greatly mitigated.
