We are a small, all-volunteer team dedicated to providing high-quality, free N95 and KN95 masks and COVID-19 tests to people across #Alaska. We have distributed over 2,300 free masks and tests since last April! #MaskUp #AlaskaSky

4️⃣ If you don't plan to mask indoors, consider how to improve your indoor air quality. Air purifiers help, and you can DIY one with as little as 1 box fan, 1 filter, and tape. Here are some different build options 👇

3️⃣ Make sure your masks fit BEFORE the #Alaska eruption. Face shape, head size, facial hair will affect fit & comfort. Do a user seal check to see if there are leaks. Modifications may help: ear savers, medical tape, nose foam, repositioning straps. More info in our FAQ below.
Masking FAQs - updated 5/6/2024. How can I tell if my mask fits me well? Perform a user seal check. Once the mask is securely on your face, hold your hands loosely around your face as you inhale and exhale to feel for air escaping out the sides. It may take a couple minutes and/or some facial movement (e.g. talking) for the mask to settle onto your face. Watch this 2.5 minute video starting from timestamp 0:30. Be sure to monitor the fit of your mask while talking or doing other activities, as movement and gradual use may loosen the fit. What do I do if my mask doesn’t fit me well? If it’s too loose, try tying knots to shorten the straps. Feel free to contact us, and we will help you find another mask that may fit better. When should I wear my mask? If you’re standing close enough to someone that you’d be able to smell their cigarette smoke if they were smoking, you may be close enough to catch COVID if they’re infections. You can also catch COVID if you enter a room that someone with COVID recently vacated. Factors like good air circulation or filtration, greater distance between yourself and other people, and lower COVID cases in your area (I.e. low wastewater levels) will reduce but not completely eliminate risk. It never hurts to wear a mask whenever you’ll be around other people. How long should I wear my mask before disposing of it? Masks typically “go back because taking them on and off wears away at the elastic in their straps. The rule of thumb is about 40 hours, but replace yours whenever it feels too loose, is visibly stained, or gets wet.

2️⃣ Since N95s are an industrial standard, they aren't sized for kids. Small N95s may do for older kids, but you may need to look for KF94s or KN95s for younger ones.

If you are outside of Alaska’s urban hubs, please consider keeping some masks on hand - our mask bloc is run by a handful of people, and you might be able to distribute much more quickly in your community during a disaster, especially if you’re based outside of the road network. #Alaska #MaskUp

In April 2024, we started the Alaska Mask Bloc with the hope of encouraging our community to mask up, while also providing quality masks to Alaskans in need. In the 8 months we've been in operation, we've distributed 881 masks, and 176 rapid antigen tests to Alaskans across the state! 1/4
