Who do I blame for this syntax instead of being able to use an in statement

some python code where i have 2 conditions to check against 2 pandas series in a df. one is a simple equality and the other is an equality with any of 3 values. i get an error if i use an "in [a, b, c]"statement, so i have to write super-undry bitwise "or" statements to check the same series 3 times, once for each value.
