Mindscape 321 | David Tong on Open Questions in Quantum Field Theory. I *know* you've been worried about why the electroweak theory cannot be defined on discrete spacetime. #MindscapePodcast

100 years ago today, #OTD in 1925, Edwin Hubble announced that Andromeda and other spiral nebulae were definitely separate galaxies outside the Milky Way, in a paper read to an AAS meeting by H.N. Russell.

There was no doubt that the Universe was more than just our little island of stars. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️

This was eloquently pointed out by physicist JJ Thomson more than a century ago.

If you want R&D to truly thrive in this country, you have to encourage both, but not by tying them more closely together. 3/3

A new claim that dark energy isn’t necessary, we just need to properly account for inhomogeneities in the universe. Maybe. But his idea has been discussed for a long time - David Wiltshire, an author here, has been pushing it for 20 years, and others have also looked at it. (1/n)

Albert Michelson, pioneer of optical interferometry, was born #OTD in 1852.

Michelson refined measurements of the speed of light, failed to find evidence of the aether, and developed a method that now underlies gravitational wave detection. 🧪 ⚛️ (1/n)
