Do they not read? Or just not read books? I consume fewer books but as much reading material

Also it can be very hard when immigrant family expectations are such that being in academics is seen as having made it in the new country and there is huge pressure to stay. I've seen a lot of those cases

It's really hard for many because they have so much time sunk into it AND their role models are there. Many stay even when unhappy because the people they admire are there. Also because those role models don't know how to look for non-academic jobs (and often don't care to know)
