At risk of flogging a dead horse: this whole letter is a reminder that the creative process is an end in and of itself, and vital to self-actualisation. You can’t experience BECOMING, as he puts it, by outsourcing it to ChatGPT.
In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write to a famous author & ask for advice.
KURT VONNEGUT - born 103yrs ago today - was the only one to respond.
His reply was a doozy.

The protagonist in Mirror Dreams by Catherine Webb was one of the first I encountered who felt complex in the sense that he wasn't just a "reluctant hero", he just wanted to live a quiet life, but also that was bullshit, he was very much a hero and just a somewhat unreliable narrator.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!
tell me about a book that changed you
for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison felt like a homecoming to a place I'd never been before. It was just spiritual.

I think about this a lot because I was not naturally a very social person and had to very deliberately develop social skills, small talk being one of them. Yeah, obviously it's nice to chat about Big things, but the Small shit is how you get there.
people bitch about small talk, but small talk — and being able to shoot the shit with a stranger — is a key fucking social skill, and while i understand it doesn’t come naturally to everyone, it *is* one that’s useful and worth working on

For my latest @aiptcomics.com deep dive, I sat down with @kierongillen.bsky.social and @stephaniehans.bsky.social to talk all things ‘Die.’ Definitely one of my favorite chats of the year, and we get into so much about the book, their collaboration, storytelling, fantasy, etc. Enjoy!
Die (Re) Loaded: Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans talk gods, character arcs, and storytelling in sequel

in many ways the writers saying "oh no they killed Bond!" makes me more worried that they thought Sean Connery, Daniel Craig and everyone in between were playing the exact same character with consistent memories and shared experiences, I find that viscerally upsetting

such a good demonstration of how AI agglomerates knowledge through predicting text: this is every single bean recipe that you’ve ever seen in your life, all at once, complete with 1/8 spoon of cinnamon (just trust me)
I am obsessed with this guy in the Rancho Gordo FB Group who decided to spend hours working with AI to figure out "the best" bean recipe instead of.....looking at actual recipes
Truly an abomination — and such a good example of how AI tricks us into thinking we can reinvent the wheel with its help
