Just saw someone on Reddit refer to a population pyramid graph as a "Population stack of spinning shawarma meat" and now I'm not sure I'm ever going to be able to present one of these the same...

Every few months now I re-read this "Who Goes Nazi?" piece from 1941 and am blown away by how it captures the people we are dealing with 80 years later.

Ignoring the fact that 2/3 of folks on Medicaid are already employed, there is just such a great historical track record of government ordered mass mobilizations of non-agrarian workforce into farm labour... 🤨
Brooke Rollins on farm laborers: "There will be no amnesty. The mass deportations continue, but in a strategic way. And we move the workforce toward automation and 100% American participation, which with 34 million able-bodied on Medicaid we should be able to do fairly quickly."

CanCon not only allows us to punch above our weight creatively, it also is low key one of the best policies for social identity and cohesion we've had in the past half century.

New indicator out from StatCan (and CMHC) today, quarterly estimates of asking rents in metro areas. Looks to me like there are no hedonic adjustments, critically for things like furnished/unfurnished units and location within CMA. But either way, good to see StatCan now working with listings data.

Perhaps one of the best visualizations of the positive impact of Canada legalizing contraceptives and birth control in the 1960s. You can mark the spot where C-48 passed (Oct 1964) by how most women were now widely able to choose when to have kids.
Fun. Canadian version:

As someone who very much appreciated robust municipal data sets...

Yeah, those should not be in the same orbit as attainable housing or so many other issues.
the global report on city happiness that said Vancouver was happiest city in North America said housing affordability was just as important as the number of publicly available municipal datasets

but nobody cares about publicly available municipal datasets if they can’t afford rent

I don't think it can be understated that it feels like the entire globe is watching Canada tonight. Reuters, Aljazeera, and BBC all have live feeds happening and its their top story on the home page.

This does not feel normal and given the current global landscape, it's both ominous and humbling.

Not our beloved Fraser Street... My heart is broken. I feel so sick reading the horrific details of what people experienced at this evening's attack. This is a violent violation of a special safe place shared by so many, on a day to celebrate Lapu Lapu. Take care of each other.

Canadian household formation peaked in 1981. While Quebec City and (until recently) Montreal managed to translate income growth into increased household formation, household formation declined in many other parts of Canada. It's mathematically impossible to reverse that without building more homes.

As someone that wrote their own masters research project on land value capture tools, this is an interesting article that should be discussed more - particularly amongst BC planners and policy makers.

"It's not just defining what we're against. We, the next generation... have to say that we're going to redeem the dream."

Strong moment of reflection and direction from Booker's filibuster.
Booker: "I confess that I have been imperfect. I confess that I've been inadequate to the moment. I've confess that the Democratic Party has made terrible mistakes that gave a lane to this demagogue. I confess we all must look in the mirror and say 'we will do better.'"

When did Elon lose your respect? It depends on when he first showed up in YOUR field and claimed to know all about it. For social media people, that was 2022. For cave rescuers, 2018. And for transport professionals, around 2017. Fine @shigashide.bsky.social piece.

First rule of hockey, protect yourself, protect your teammates. If the other team isn't going to respect that, elbows up. Sorry neighbour.
Trudeau: "I want to speak first directly to the American people. We don't want this. We want to work with you as a friend and ally. We don't want to see you hurt either. But your government has chosen to do this to you. As of this morning, markets are down and inflation is set to rise dramatically."

Truly saddened to hear of Shoup's passing. He was a catalyst for so much in our field and his work is so incredibly important to this day. Rest in piece Don.
I'm deeply saddened to share that Donald Shoup passed away last night. He was the ideal academic—curious, methodical, and concerned with turning ideas into real-world change. TAing his parking course these past few years has one of the greatest honors of my life. Rest in peace, Shoup Dogg.

Pertinent vibe check in the face on everything that is happening:

"We don’t need any more irony-poisoned hot takes or cathartic, irreverent snark. We need to collectively decide what kind of world we actually do want, and what we’re willing to do to achieve it."

"My reluctant nationalism boils down to thinking there’s something good here that could be made much better. It’s driven by a desire to preserve our sovereignty so we can work out for ourselves how to do better and, in the process, to fight for those within our borders to live how they wish to live"
Canada is a country worth fighting for against anyone who’d roll up and sock us in the kisser, goddamn them.

I will still stand up for my country and our right to decide for ourselves how we want to live.
