Excitatory-neuron-derived interleukin-34 supports cortical developmental microglia function
While neurons and microglia are known to talk to one another, the signals that regulate their complex, important interactions are not comprehensively defined. Devlin et al. find that the cytokine IL-34 produced by excitatory neurons instructs the development and functional maturation of microglia in the mouse anterior cingulate cortex.
