I also read this super weird fast-paced sci-fi book! it was like a movie. it’s set in future south africa and has robots, demigods, and too much to explain in one post lol. it was quick and fun!

read 25% of king’s dragon and it’s not bad at all, but I’m not feeling in love with it like I want to be. setting it aside for now and looking for something to get obsessed with instead

this was really good!! the chapters felt almost like essays about different aspects of white feminism and how they harm women of color. the author combines historical context and modern day examples nicely to explain her main points. highly recommend to anyone but especially to other white women!

navola mini review

🤩 the world and plot were complex and very political, the pacing kept me turning the pages (it escalated as the book went on)

🙂 the characters were messy and complicated

😬 it was a little crass for my taste, and it was right at the limit of my violence tolerance

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

navola reading update:

I’m about halfway through and just finished part 2. the plot is picking up quite a bit after a pretty slow-paced beginning, and I’m really interested in the story.

on a negative note, some of the descriptions are very written by a man (derogatory) and I hate that 🤢

me? absolutely loving the beginning of a book where the setup is someone reflecting on his life story starting from when he was a kid in complicated circumstances? that has rich worldbuilding? and the first sentence of the book mentions a dragon?

last - now - next

last: we could be rats by emily austin (so good, 5⭐️, but check content warnings)

now: navola by paolo bacigalupi (trying to read this one slowly because it’s fantastic)

next: the heart of what was lost by tad williams (so excited)
