Could the latter be because they took 8% more students than last year? The 8% that would have ordinarily gone to another institution. We need student number caps back, with hard widening access targets, urgently.

Watching this unfold with no one stepping in to help is heartbreaking. I was made redundant from a university in 2020 (thanks for that). Professional services were the canaries in the coal mines years ago but no one paid any real attention until academic staff started being affected.
With Leeds Trinity and Loughborough we're now actually at 83, or exactly half of the 166 universities @timeshighered.bsky.social counts.

HALF OF OUR UNIVERSITIES ARE SHEDDING STAFF. In a normal timeline, politicians would care about this and try to do *something*, *anything*, right?
