God, we do this EVERY YEAR. I'm so tired of this endless debate as to whether it's a holiday movie, or simply takes place on a holiday, so let me make it clear once and for all--

Yes, NIGHT EYES 3 *is* a Christmas movie.

I’m just a boy, standing in front of the Criterion Collection, asking for a 4K UHD of Wong Kar-wai’s 2046 for Christmas.

For the last day of #Noirvember, nab this THE LAST SEDUCTION 4K UHD set from @imprintfilms.bsky.social. Features three different versions of the film, as well as an 80-page booklet with a new essay (“One Of Those Sudden Horny Things”) by your ol pal Travis.

—LOVE CRIME, the erotic noir that inspired De Palma’s PASSION

—WOMEN ON THE RUN, a gender-flipped 48HRS

—DEVIL FETUS, a fuckmonster extravaganza

I wrote a piece on my favorite American crime writer—and some of my favorite crime films—for the new issue of THIS IS @cine-matographe.bsky.social. There are a few copies left on the @vinsyn.bsky.social website, which will be live on Black Friday.

Farewell to the incredible Udo Kier, who I first discovered after stealing Madonna’s SEX book from a Waldenbooks when I was 12.

2025 really is the fucking worst.

Priscilla, can I interest you in the 1988 erotic thriller CALL ME?
November 17, 2025 at 3:14 AM
I’ve thought of LOVE HOTEL every fuckin day since I first saw it back in April.
November 14, 2025 at 3:41 AM
LOVE HOTEL, a 1985 Japanese pink film/erotic drama that transcends its exploitation roots, achieving a level of devastation (emotional, libidinal) that stunned me.

A movie about how you can spend your whole life trying to solve what happened one night, when you could have let that night solve you.

It’s based on a watercolor by the artist Jay Shaw, and my tattoo artist (Craig Jackman of American Electric) did an excellent job of translating that to skin.

Happy Noirvember, here’s my Elliott Gould LONG GOODBYE tattoo.

Fascinated with this cunty little exit Krueger makes in NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2.

Biggest jump scare in the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4K box set.

Also discussed: How De Palma’s films wear their hearts on their sleeves in such unabashed and emotionally-outsized ways that their romances are misperceived as satire or cheese. They are not!

So many of Brian De Palma’s films are not about yearning. They ARE yearning.

I am thinking once again about how Ken Russell’s CRIMES OF PASSION was released on October 19, 1984, ***and just one week later*** Brian De Palma’s BODY DOUBLE was released.

This is what we had. We were once a nation of perverts.

“Braided together, the film’s long-con dual twist—Tyler isn’t real, Marla’s love is—serves as the delivery system of FIGHT CLUB’s meaning:

"We must take responsibility for ourselves, because no one else will.”

On FIGHT CLUB's birthday:

"FIGHT CLUB is not an all-out assault on the hypocrisies of society. FIGHT CLUB is a devastating satire about a man’s fear of rejection and reflection by a woman he can’t admit he is falling in love with.

"FIGHT CLUB is Jack’s fear of finally growing up."
