Hello Bluesky, just thought I’d start one of these as an outlet to chuck all of my obscure/interesting photos and findings from in the lab or out in the field.

And also as a way to stay connected and up to date with my fellows and the marine world !
Any UK based marine enthusiasts! The Rock Pool Project is running a National BioBlitz from 17th–25th of May.

iNaturalist will be used to ID & record data of non-native & invasive species in UK coastal habitats.

Just the latest major blow to offshore wind as Orsted discontinues the 2.4gw Hornsea 4 project because the investment no longer adds up. This is one of the world’s biggest offshore wind farms and is critical to the UK’s energy and climate goals

Had a great time the other week out on the boat with the people at SeaGrown.

We’ve been doing zooplankton sampling along with CTD drops for the last few months to monitor plankton blooms all the way out to the 12 mile range off Scarborough

Palaemon serratus (top) & Pandalus montagui (bottom) are species that can be hard to discern in the field, with similar proportions & colour.

Looking at number of spines on the rostrum & segments in pereopod 2 make it much easier in the lab.

Having way too much fun with the OM TG-7 image stacking.

For today's Teesside Lead...

I spoke to a marine biologist from the University of Hull about how the 2021 Tees crustacean mortalities helped the response to this week's North Sea collision.
'We have to get better at this' - Marine scientist calls for better monitoring of water after North Sea collision
Plus: Tees Valley Combined Authority paid Teesside Airport £12.7m last year

A fun case of usual-unusual: Most luminescence in the sea is blue-green, but Tomopteris worms emit yellow light.

With Warren Francis, we found a species that emits blue light — unusual but usual. 🦑🧪

I’m going to start this off strong with one of my all time favourite finds in a benthic sample.

Look at the size of this Arctica islandica! Can you work out how old it is by counting the number of yearly growth rings?
