In Granada, past the houses and hills, I kept expecting to find the sea

#ASHEcon2025 has been awesome! Attended some great presentations, got helpful feedback on my paper, and made new friends

I’ll try to recap some of the talks but I forgot to take photos (I did take notes!)

How are we already a week into June?

📊🩻 As a follow-up, I wrote about breaking into healthcare data roles after receiving questions from soon-to-be graduates and early-career generalists

Hope this helps some of you! What advice did I miss?

If they hadn't told you the dog was drowning, what would you have thought?

Depressing ProPublica article re: prominent Montana oncologist

I'm unfamiliar with the law. Can someone explain why it's unclear if the suspicious deaths are being investigated? Is the evidence insufficient? Are investigators unable to disclose more? Why was his license renewed?

I did, however, spend plenty of time looking for animals. I'm especially fond of finding small cats and dogs in paintings

The Wedding at Cana by Veronese is a great example, though I haven't seen it in person

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Beautiful but too crowded on Presidents' Day to be truly enjoyable. Why do I keep visiting museums on public holidays?

I was too grumpy to look up at the ceilings -- I always look at ceilings! -- and missed The Coronation of Hebe

Next time...

And here are four pieces I'd like to see, off the top of my head. No trips yet planned

I didn't get around to reflecting on 2024, and suddenly it's February, so I'll compromise by sharing a few pieces I enjoyed seeing last year:

- Dull Gret
- Two Crabs
- Bust of Nefertiti
- An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump

More lazy weekend baking. Swedish sticky chocolate cake (Kladdkaka)

Probably the easiest thing I know how to bake. Doesn't disappoint except when I'm trying to lift slices out of the pan (well, they did say it would be sticky)

Baked some fluffy buttermilk cookies to try and finish off an endless bottle of buttermilk. They're tastier than they look!

Could have been more generous with the cinnamon sugar

I have way too much batter left and need to figure out the best way to freeze it

I was excited to hear Marty Makary speak about his new book (Blind Spots: When Medicine Gets It Wrong...) after listening to the EconTalk podcast. Sadly, I'll be out of town

Aren't these the cutest spoons?
- Miya (miyacompany.com), Palmer Square, Princeton

No, I didn't buy any. I've restraint but no grace. I'd chip these immediately

Last weekend in Princeton! Now that I live in Texas, I appreciate the tall trees and autumn foliage I once took for granted

🍃 Late September in Austin

Neighborhood park is in pretty shades of chartreuse

Saw my first green stink bug. I didn't know it at the time, got rather close, left unscathed

Shorter days and slow weekends are good excuses to host friends before everyone disperses for the holidays

Selfishly, it’s a way to make sure I have weekday meals/leftovers without hating the process. Hosting is fun, unlike cooking for myself

I knew I'd joined pretty early (and just not used BlueSky at all) but was still surprised :)
