It’s so reassuring to know that we can abuse and discriminate against other humans in a harmless and polite way. Obviously when I call Mr F a loathsome venomous grifting snake, I am doing so with the greatest respect and consideration for his feelings.
What an interesting choice of words

I’m pleased to have been elected to the national council of the European Movement @europeanmovement.co.uk . Hoping that in my own small way I can contribute to the dialogue and partnerships we all need for a safer and saner future.

This is good news. @anilseth.bsky.social is an outstanding thinker. His recent Humanists UK lecture on consciousness and AI was thought-provoking on many levels.
Thrilled to welcome @anilseth.bsky.social as @humanists.uk's newest patron. At a time when understanding who we are is more important than ever, we're honoured to have such a lucid and compelling voice joining us to champion the power of rational inquiry.

A system that diminishes the rights of people fleeing persecution isn't just impractical, it's a failure of our common humanity. Vital that once asylum seekers are granted refugee status, they are able to build their lives with certainty about their future & a sense of welcome.

Hark! Do I hear voices from the far right singing the praises of this person with a non-English-sounding name. No. Just the continuing squeak of rats and the slush of sewage.
The noise you hear is the collective swallowing of a thousand right whinge commentators' words www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
I hope he is awarded the highest possible honour for saving lives.

He uses the old trope about immigration destroying “our culture”. What can he possibly mean? Surely nothing to do with the colour of peoples faces? (But will any journalist put him on the spot?) The only impact of immigration on our culture throughout history, i.m.o, has been to enrich it.
Jenrick's attempts to out-Farage Farage are hugely irresponsible.

His plan for "a sustained period of net emmigration" would be devastating for the UK economy and public services.

Does he look at Brexit and think "we just didn't do enough damage there"?

Day in, day out, I speak to ordinary people who are organising to welcome the asylum seekers accommodated in their towns.

They befriend, support them, reach out to them as fellow human beings.

That's the Britain I know, the one I see around me & we never get told about on TV.

One odd thing that is left out of the small boats discourse is how much the problem was directly caused by Conservative policy – specifically Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal.

2018: 299 small boat arrivals
2019: 1,843 arrivals

Truss’s 49-day premiership: 10,523 small boat arrivals
“The right wing of Britain’s commentariat and its politicians have embraced an agenda they would have condemned just 18 months ago, out of expediency and self-interest. If the UK is on the verge of a crisis, it is this – more than those risking their lives on small boats – that is behind it.”
Britain’s real immigration scandal is not the one you think
A so-called national crisis isn’t being driven by migrant boats - but by a cynical political class that would rather feed fears than fix anything

I went past the rally in Parliament Square today. A couple of thousand peaceful protesters. Surrounded on all sides by a cordon of police, and literally dozens of police vans. This is absolute intimidation. What is happening to this country???

I am not a Green Party member but this video is great. We need more like this from all progressive voices, to call out the extreme right (ie all rw parties, currently, and their media supporters) for what they are.
⏳Final week to sign up to the Green Party.

I’ve just been at a meeting on UK-EU policy. It brought home to me the real divide we face. On one side, policy makers who have no idea what matters to ordinary people or how to communicate with them. On the other, ordinary people who neither know nor care about abstruse policy discussions.

This petty, vindictive man (and the many like him) can only ever think about small-minded solutions to second-level problems. We need politicians to be a force for good, and to speak of what they would do to make us economically, socially, culturally and morally better off.
The Tories in a nutshell. Honest Bob Jenrick who scandalously pushed through planning to help his mates avoid millions in tax, complaining about fare-dodging, as though that's the reason our living standards are getting worse.

The Brexiters simply have to be defeated now. There is no way of accommodating their emotional outbursts with the national interest. There's no way to improve our economy while respecting their demands. So they have to vanquished.

And Brexiters are howling about betrayal, fish, ‘holding all the cards’ and immigration.
Same lies. Same prejudice. And same failure if we don’t ignore them.
