A SERIOUS request to @michaelrbloomberg.bsky.social — please create an account for Bloomberg Citylab here on @bsky.app. Citylab has been an excellent platform for articles about cities (I used to write for it, and @langealexandra.bsky.social won a Pulitzer for it!).

REPOST if you support Citylab.
“Toderian, Vancouver’s former planning chief, has identified a 3-part formula for child-friendly downtowns.

Housing is most critical: Without [two or] three-bedroom apts, it’s ‘game-over’ for families in downtowns, he says.”

Read on — my interview on kid-friendly downtowns, in Bloomberg Citylab.
Struggling Downtowns Are Looking to Lure New Crowds
Traditional business districts in cities like Chicago and Portland are still waiting for office workers to return. Can younger residents and families fill the gap?

I think its really hard to articulate to others what living next to major construction is like. We lived through the buildings next door (a six story and five story building) get demoed and built and it was a horrible experience at every stage with no way to deal with them violating rules.
And so here we are voting on a zoning overlay that is going to flat-out bone my neighborhood for the next decade ... assuming it gets built at all ... and I'm still kind of raw about what the Mayor said [checks watch] like 90 minutes ago.

Silicon Valley's Push Into Transportation Has Been a Miserable Failure
The titans of tech brought plenty of disruption to our broken transportation system but delivered little in the way of innovation.

Previous to the FDA, folks would put chalk and plaster of Paris in milk to make it appear white. They could also add formaldehyde to cover the smell and taste of spoiled milk.

Meanwhile, if we stopped creating life-threatening emergencies for ourselves in the USA, we could start to easily and quickly improve basic living conditions, like the quality of the AIR WE BREATHE for crying out loud

Never forget, when you’re being asked to prove that safe bike-lanes or pedestrian crossings across unsafe conditions are ‘needed,’ it's hard to justify a bridge by the number of people swimming across a raging river.

I remember how hellish the commute from the south end to cambrideport was. Amazing to see how fast bike infrastructure improves. Well done @boston.gov

Its very frustrating seeing error after error after error from DOGE who seem to just not understand basic accounting. We all want more efficient government. www.youtube.com/watch?v=71hK...

It's really hard for me to look at real estate prices in Massachusetts and understand how anyone but the extremely rich can live here anymore.

Quite scary seeing how much people are spending on gas and insurance for cars. Families routinely spend close to $600 to $1000 a month in some areas of the US!
