Propaganda is very, very powerful, and people are very, very dumb

I could walk maybe 5 minutes to any number of clinics from where I'm sitting and pay at point of care for all sorts of things where it's literally criminal to do so. It doesn't matter. Nobody cares

If you've had it for a while, like here in Canada, there's a few different ways that people tolerate it. One is simply taking it for granted and thinking "they would never!" like in the post I quoted. I've had people incredulously say things like "the Conservatives wouldn't do that!" to my face
