Canadian living in France. From Saskatoon, SK. @usask alumnus. Farmer (market gardener), scientist, traveler, foodie, husband, & cat dad. He/him.
Our winter crop of greens is coming along well here in Burgundy 🇫🇷. I've always been fascinated by 4-season gardening using unheated greenhouses and crop covers, but it was nigh-on impossible in Dec, Jan, & Feb in SK. Often in Nov & Mar as well. However, we experimented a lot. Here, it's a breeze.

I saw this comment the other day. There is something seriously wrong with some Canadians. I checked her profile—not a bot or fake account.

Another farmer gave us some habaneros he grew. I'm using one—carefully—in supper tonight. Their odor reminds me of Putin. Why? I ate my first habanero (I grew it!) as a 15 y/o in 2000 while watching BBC covering the 2000 Russian election. When dictators grab power, they retain it for a long time.

💯

Look at the interesting juxtaposition of your post and the one above it on my feed. Says it all, really.

A 3 hour drive to Basel, Switzerland, and we've been #Covid #vaccinated with the Moderna LP.8.1 vaccine. H/t to @hwiesenmueller.bsky.social for mentioning Anfos Apotheke to me. I prefer Moderna's higher dose over Pfizer (the latter will work fine for our 2nd dose in France in Dec.). Paid ~125CHF pp

TW (racism). Canadians, we have a problem. A comment on @charlieangus104.bsky.social FB page took me down a rabbit hole to the grandiosely named "Dominion Society of Canada". It's a white nationalist organization that makes ICE look like child's play. They operate in plain sight.

Lichfield near Birmingham? I was there this past spring.
The OP mentioned "shallow white roots" only because of what a US Senator publicly said, that American identity was linked to being of European ethnicity. It's important context. The US is being governed by racists.

Yup. We've had a relentless heatwave here in France and our tomatoes are starting to taste funny this week. They're warmth-lovers, not heat-lovers. By the way, here's a picture of my last okra picking. Next year, I'll plant them directly in the ground. It didn't work in SK (soil too cold).

Need yet more evidence of climate change? This is the weather forecast for Dijon, France (I live near this city). It has *never* recorded a temperature in the 40s. That could change next week if this forecast pans out.

PS: Don't visit France in summertime. Come between October & May.

It makes me think exactly of this old cartoon, although the Grim Reapers, rather than being mythological, are fellow humans.

Picking eggplants/aubergines for lunch. I'll fry them up & serve with briny Greek feta & some ravioli in 🍅 sauce. We grew tons of purple ones back home in SK 🇨🇦, but the green ones need very warm summer nights to thrive. They do well here in Burgundy 🇫🇷. I don't enjoy the heat but our garden does.

Okra growing well in the steamy French summer heat. Both my hometown (Saskatoon 🇨🇦, 52°N) and my new home (47°N) near Dijon 🇫🇷 are broadly in the temperate climate zone, but the former was close to subarctic last century. The latter, with rapid climate change, is now entering the subtropical zone.

It's a warm summer evening here in Burgundy, France, and the sunshine is distinctly hazy from SK & MB wildfire smoke that traversed the Atlantic. It's a surreal juxtaposition of my former home (SK) and my new home.

N95 + regular vaccination is the way. Both are extremely important and I continue to use both. I kind of get OP's point too, though. Look at this screenshot of TL, for example—she has a massive following in the CC community and posts egregious antivax misinfo. This isn't acceptable.
May 14, 2025 at 8:20 AM
She posts misinfo. This is actually antivax disinformation 101. Covid vaccines, if updated & administered regularly, reduce the risk of infection and transmission significantly. To argue otherwise is not unlike babbling about chemtrails.
May 12, 2025 at 4:50 PM
This person blocked me after I pointed out the inaccuracy & hyperbole in her statement, "vaccines don't meaningfully reduce transmission". This is the kind of antivax misinfo from the fringes of the Covid-aware community that does even more damage than typical antivax disinfo from the rightwing.
May 12, 2025 at 3:42 PM
We drove to Germany to get a Novavax booster, our 3rd in the JN.1/KP.2 family and 14th Covid vax overall. Instead of the obligatory vaccine selfie, here's one of the cake we rewarded ourselves with. I hope there will be an updated version this autumn, despite the antivax toxicity of the US regime.

Voted! Off you go on your transatlantic journey to 🇨🇦 and do your part in not getting a mini-Trump elected.

78% of black men did vote for her, a much higher percentage than WW.

It's true. This photo I snapped today is of a USAF C17 Globemaster that flew over us in rural Burgundy, France. When we lived in rural Saskatchewan, we saw USAF Globemasters overflying us on their way from Lewis McChord (WA) to Europe. I don't see them as friendly aircraft these days.

Same guy, 3 months later. The US has a veritable plague of utterly mediocre men like this in positions of power they did not attain through merit.
April 7, 2025 at 2:16 PM
That isn't true. Race, not gender, was the dominant factor. Within each racial demographic, it's true that women are modestly less right-wing. However, the differences between demographics eclipse this.

💯. It's difficult to take reassurances at face value when others post comments like this in the screenshot. It wasn't a MAGA. She started bashing Canadians viciously when I suggested that blue states secede to stop the momentum toward a fully fascist country.
March 30, 2025 at 10:30 AM
A majority of white American women voted for fascism, FYI.
March 30, 2025 at 9:16 AM
These are the comments that I (and a couple of other Canadians) received from an American ticked off at all the US-bashing. Not a MAGA either. Charming folk.
