Last week a German journalist contacted me after finding my book at MoMA, so I of course had to go see it there for myself! ❤️ My first time seeing it in a bookstore! Very exciting. 😍

Anyone who goes to see the Sargent show at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, please snap a pic of my book in that shop. 🙏

Thrilled to be presenting my newest research on Louise Abbéma and lesbian self-fashioning in Belle-Epoque Paris at the Feminist Art History Conference in DC on Sunday. #arthistory 🗃️

Plot twist: Arc de Triomphe lady has red hair. Now do people think she's a different lady? Or do we think it's just dyed? #arthistory #France

There is tremendous diversity in her portraiture. It was one of her specialties. But she did paint several women quite often (in the other cases I know they were close friends), so I'm intrigued by who this woman might be. They're definitely not self-portraits; here's a self-portrait:

Reposting this as 2 of the women are being hidden unless you click. (There are 4 women here).

What about this woman? Same or different? This painting is about 8 years earlier than the others. @nuitsdeyoung.bsky.social

I'm virtually positive the 2 women on the left are the same and the 2 women on the right (boater/red hat) are the same, but do we think they're all the same woman? What about the 2 blondes? I think they're the same, but are they yet a 3rd woman? These are all paintings by Louise Abbéma. #arthistory

Transcription help! I can't make out the word/name "Vos lettres pornographiques, Esquier?, m’ont profondément révolté !
Comment l’austere Fontane, le mieux auteur de l’Histoire universelle, n’a trouvé a se loger que dans un replis es gorges-Pailly !" Fontane is Marius Fontane. 🗃️ #French

I did it via the Wiki edu platform. I think you can see the whole assignment at the link below (& stats so far). I had never edited Wikipedia before and it was honestly quite easy, though it was a lot of work, so I'd recommend it for small, high-level courses. dashboard.wikiedu.org/courses/Fash...

This is a very common prop in fashion plates. In my chapter I argue it’s performing bourgeois femininity.

A lovely Louise Abbéma portrait from 1891. Can anyone help me decipher the name? Looks like "Mme la Marquise de Gandzy"? Real Mme X (by Sargent) vibes. #arthistory #academicsky #fashionhistory

Very excited to see Louise Abbéma's 1879 Salon portrait (which I'd never seen before!) pop up on an auction site: drouot.com/fr/l/2882313... I think it may represent Marie-Caroline du Fresnay, but am not sure. Love the snake bracelet!

"in a rowboat on a park lake. The curators said they wanted to spotlight long-forgotten female artists, such as Abbéma, to revive interest in their work." Here is the work the NYTimes labelled a "surprise."

So #fashionhistory peeps, what do we think our lady on the beach is up to? She clearly has a needle and some kind of lace? panel, but also blue yarn? What are the green and black things on her lap?

Good job, but what you’re currently doing is embroidery 😊. Cross stitching involves little Xs. I’ve found this chart useful.

You're welcome! She was quite a discovery for me as well. I talk about two of her paintings in my forthcoming book, but I'm now planning to feature her heavily in my next book project. She was friends with De Nittis. He dedicated his Place de la Madeleine watercolor to her.

Today in strange art find news, apparently Abbéma made a loose copy of Marcus Stone's 1888 "In Love." Hers is dated 1894. A kitschy choice and not really much like her other work at this moment. Very odd, lol. Not her best work.

Been spending a lot of time on auction websites looking for Abbéma works and happened across this unexpected oil by Jules Alexandre Grün titled "Blanche," which is new to me. I wonder who she is? That's a fabulous hat!

4/ Found a slightly better image of the Abbéma which confirms the first image is smushed thanks to RKD
