Still beautiful; still one of SF’s most popular parks. Sunset Dunes forever.

Four years ago, SSR was started to make the great highway permanently car-free. Now, sunset dunes is one of SF's most popular parks. Like the embarcadero and central freeway removals, there may be more fights ahead, but we're not going back.

It is so cool that, at the same moment that reactionary elites are making a massive frontal assault on the basic concept of education, there's a new fake university funded by those same elites that exists to teach briefcase-to-school kids how to say "that is so INTERESTING" to their future bosses.

After attending public comment one time:
This is something I've really come to believe over the years: everything would be so much easier if we could just design systems for the 70-80ish% of normal, decent people. But that 20-30ish% of fearful, angry authoritarian personalities is *extraordinarily* capable at destroying things.

It’s perfectly possible that large language models have wonderful use cases, but specific examples of them seem unusually elusive, whereas unbuttressed assertions that the use cases are clear or obvious from people who refuse to answer any follow up questions are rather thick on the ground.
people are getting mad at Hank about this but he’s just objectively correct here; there’s this pseudo-Luddite thing going on where folks insist that LLMs do not have any use cases despite that clearly not being true, particularly with how cheap they are to operate (you can run deepseek on a raspi)
There are a lot of critiques of LLMs that I agree with but "they suck and aren't useful" doesn't really hold water.

I understand people not using them because of social, economic, and environmental concerns. And I also understand people using them because they can be very useful.

Thoughts?

fun historical fact: among the core political forces in the development of mass incarceration was the "Victims' Rights Movement". Its first major legislative national legislative victory was under President Reagan. The prison population doubled under his administration.
An innocent man who committed no crime but is the same race as the person who murdered your daughter should have to spend the rest of his life in a concentration camp is the argument?

On 3/29, visits surged to 5,700, & on 4/5 & 4/6, they reached approximately 5,800 & 6,100—far surpassing historical weekend traffic. The boom in visits highlights Sunset Dunes’ growing role as a must-visit coastal destination.

The throughline connecting most of the issues facing us today is that American elite institutions in so many different fields (media, academia, legal, political, etc) want the respect, deference, and privilege of serving important societal roles and none of the responsibility that would with that.

One of the disturbing reactions to the Mahmoud Khalil arrest is people making things up that he did to justify it that even the Trump admin doesn't claim he did. People just see him as the *type* of person who did the things they're mad about, so punishing him for it is acceptable. Lynching logic.

To be absolutely, 100% clear, THIS is something that ends in “then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out”
This extreme escalation is an egregious violation of first amendment rights. Now is the moment to speak out and oppose this as fiercely and loudly as possible.

“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”
