Under our criminal legal system, whether or not you sit in jail depends on whether you have thousands of dollars to spend to get out. That's not justice.

All it takes is one interaction with the criminal legal system to permanently alter your life—and it doesn't matter if you're found guilty or not. Even in cases where it'sclear that someone should return home, cash bail as a default can cause them to lose their housing and their job.

Cash bail often disrupts and destroys the lives of people before they have even had their day in court. It's time to end the cash bail system in Kansas.

Discrimination at every step of our criminal legal system has corroded it from the inside out, layer after layer. Ending the use of cash bail is one concrete way we can begin mending our broken system.

Judges have a lot of control over the bail amounts to meet someone's circumstances, but they rarely fully use it. Instead of rubber stamping impractical, harsh, and destructive bail amounts, they should be using their discretion to reduce financial burden and make our communities safer.
