Under our criminal legal system, whether or not you sit in jail depends on whether you have thousands of dollars to spend to get out. That's not justice.

All it takes is one interaction with the criminal legal system to permanently alter your life—and it doesn't matter if you're found guilty or not. Even in cases where it'sclear that someone should return home, cash bail as a default can cause them to lose their housing and their job.

When authorities are unleashed on people for sharing their opinions, our communities and our values are threatened. We can not allow this to become the norm in our state.

Your freedom should not depend on how much money you have — but the cash bail system holds people in jail regardless of their guilt or innocence in Sedgwick County and across Kansas.
