In Kansas, someone can be arrested and have their life ruined well before they even have their first appearance in court. This isn't justice—which is why we're working so hard to fix our broken systems.

Under our criminal legal system, whether or not you sit in jail depends on whether you have thousands of dollars to spend to get out. That's not justice.
September 29, 2025 at 3:31 PM
All it takes is one interaction with the criminal legal system to permanently alter your life—and it doesn't matter if you're found guilty or not. Even in cases where it'sclear that someone should return home, cash bail as a default can cause them to lose their housing and their job.

Craig McKinnis would have been 54 years old today had it not been for conduct of the Kansas City Kansas Police Department. Today we remember Craig McKinnis and his family as we continue to hope for safety from police violence.

When authorities are unleashed on people for sharing their opinions, our communities and our values are threatened. We can not allow this to become the norm in our state.

The Trump administration continues to perpetuate anti-immigrant sentiment, this time by restricting public benefit programs to folks with certain immigration statuses. Kansans won't fall for rhetoric that points to immigrants as the faulty ones in our broken healthcare system.

Your freedom should not depend on how much money you have — but the cash bail system holds people in jail regardless of their guilt or innocence in Sedgwick County and across Kansas.

"The worship of money leads to a hardening of the heart. And it can lead any of us to condone, either actively or passively, the exploitation and dehumanization of ourselves and others." -- bell hooks.

Cash bail often disrupts and destroys the lives of people before they have even had their day in court. It's time to end the cash bail system in Kansas.

Discrimination at every step of our criminal legal system has corroded it from the inside out, layer after layer. Ending the use of cash bail is one concrete way we can begin mending our broken system.

Judges have a lot of control over the bail amounts to meet someone's circumstances, but they rarely fully use it. Instead of rubber stamping impractical, harsh, and destructive bail amounts, they should be using their discretion to reduce financial burden and make our communities safer.

By engaging with 287(g) Agreements, Kansas counties are participating in malicious and unnecessary compliance with ICE and federal anti-immigration policy. We are calling on these Kansas counties to stop doing ICE's job for them and defend the communities they've sworn to protect.

We applaud those who stood up with @airrkc against tyranny yesterday in Lenexa and Kansas City. We condemn these attacks on our immigrant communities and encourage all Kansans to continue to show up in support of each other.

The Primary Election Day is only a week away. With anti-trans legislation effecting trans and nonbinary identification in the state, we wanted to put out a reminder that NO KANSAS LAWS can strip away your right to vote based on gender identification.
