I wrote this a few years back after disappointing someone in an unavoidable way. It was far too cold to go for a walk to clear my head.

I just sat inside and felt sorry for myself. (I should have felt sorry for them, instead)

I look away. You never saw me behind the curtain (closed-eyed, practically blind) but I was! and I did! light every single point on the candelabra that winter-chokehold night flip it upside down, follow the turning points all the way home. Well, I’m sorry. For all the good (it’ll do) candles clambering head over heels burn twice as fast." The poem is aligned to the left side of a grainy photograph of the inside of a bell tower, dimly lit by two white candles that sit on an orange tile floor next to a sprayed open book of common prayer.
