Retired librarian. Disabled veteran. Chaser of balloons, waterfalls, and dreams.
Time cracked bauble
Falls from the box
And once-held
Memories of Christmas
Spill onto the linoleum floor.
The light shifts,
And I am once again that child
Who laughed boisterously
Under light-laden trees
And danced under
A falling snow.
The ghosts of Christmas past
Nod their approval.

Hide such horrific secrets
Children must endure

In the wee hours
When the house is quiet,
My crepuscular brain
Starts to do
Its nightly zoomies,
Those mental calisthenics
That are often accompanied
By shame, guilt, and
The crippling remorse
That lives in the shadows.
I have come to
Loathe the creature
That dwells in the dark.

Perhaps it is an experiment.
Perhaps a curious god
has chosen us to undergo
trials and tribulations
Weather
Famine
Political turmoil
Hatred
Bigotry
Chaos
Perhaps they are doing this
To test our mettle;
Perhaps we will falter.
Perhaps we shall fail
altogether.

What then?

On highways and byways,
Ghost bikes hold their vigil;
Two wheeled skeletons
with unseen riders
Decorated with flowers and bittersweet memories.
Intermingled with descansos
and roadside crosses,
They are a reminder
That speed comes as a thief
To steal those we love

They call themselves
Downwinders
Survivors of atomic bombs
From Socorro to Alamogordo
The victims of
Government wrongs.
Families, upon waking
Saw a brilliant flash of light
They heard the sonic yawp
Saw a dozen crows take flight
In the distance a lone coyote
Wept into the night.

My fingers hover
Over time worn keys
My heart begins to stutter
"You need to finish,"
I tell myself.
In the next room,
the cat starts to mutter.
Just two little words
Then it's done;
But wait: there's
another scene!
I type "THE END"
And hit return.
My inner critic screams.

I chanced upon
a darkened trail,
My worries to escape;
The trees they formed
a shrouded veil
That tugged upon my cape.
I stumbled on a jutting root
And let out a sonorous yawp
As balance gave way
to gravity
And I to my knees did drop.
I was a vision going home
As upon one foot I hopped.

Life was only bearable
Because I knew you.

Vincent watched
the summer sky
The stars cast
rings of light.
Sapphire winds
carved velvet trails
O'er landscapes
Shadowed bright.
The moon became
a constant friend
Trees whispered
Secrets old.
He asked his brush
To guide his hand
As he painted
Streams of gold

Taylor was a unique lass
Was known as a contrarian
Rather than choosing red or blue
She voted libertarian
If formal was the dress du jour
She'd show up wearing sandals
Her friends began to shut her out
After tiring from her scandals
Eventually she moved out west
As a roadie for the Vandals

History is burning,
The beams and rafters
Crumbling around us;
The structures we knew
when we lived analog lives,
When songs were unamplified
And music danced around us
In whisps of sound.
We shuffle now
Through embers of past lives
And remember better days.

He wanted a wedding
That showcased his love
All tuxes and cummerbunds
And lily white doves.
When she showed up in burlap
And her eyes painted black,
Needless to say
He was taken aback.
She threw back her head
And laughed at his horror;
Her humor was legend
But 'twas timing she lacked.
