Bioinorganic and materials chemist at UiT, Tromsø, Norway. Interested in porphyrins, corroles, transition metals, synchrotrons & DFT. Also birds, seafood, travel, diversity, scicomm & Sanskrit. Indian, 🏳️‍🌈
Six years ago Paul Kiparsky and I were able to combine two of our intellectual passions – chemistry & Sanskrit: Why did Mendeleev give partially Sanskrit names to as yet unknown elements? Our theory still stands ... check out the story in American Scientist: www.americanscientist.org/article/the-...

It may be dark times for Palestinians but one of their compatriots won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry today. Congrats to Dr. Omar Yaghi and the other laureates. Talent knows no nationality! 🇵🇸🏆💪

Another shitty day at 70 N😜 (Tromsø harbor)

Lovely evening with John Enemark (of “Enemark-Feltham” fame), Mary Enemark, and Jeanet Conradie at our neighborhood bistro in downtown Tromsø. We all had steamed halibut and blackcurrant sorbet. Check out: doi.org/10.1016/j.ji...

After a hard morning of grant-writing, the æser decided I deserved halibut for lunch. #tromsø

Just spent 4 amazing days in San Diego, meeting UCSD colleagues. Also dined with old friends Lou Noodleman and Charlie Perrin. Perrin is 86 – 30 in Celsius 😉 – and still teaching!

I stayed an extra day after #WATOC to take part in the Oslo Pride Parade! Wise decision! What a blast!

WATOC was long (an entire week, including Young WATOC), exhausting, and utterly amazing! Many thanks to Trygve Helgaker and his team for the superb organization!

With Claude Gros as Co-Chair and PhD student Krister Johannessen as coordinator, the 2nd French-Norwegian symposium on inorganic & materials chemistry June 19-20 on campus at @UiTNorgesarktis was a distinct success! 💪 OurArctic cuisine didn’t disappoint either! Thanks to all! 🙏

Pleasant day in Rome: lecture at Sapienza University of Rome (my hosts are Donato Monti and Giuseppe Pomarico). Donato has an axolotl in his office!

At Per Siegbahn’s 80th birthday symposium in beautiful springtime Stockholm. Good to Jan Bäckvall, Astrid Gräslund and Hans Ågren among many others and of course Per!

And here's the final published version of the paper: The Enemark-Feltham formalism at 50: An interview with John Enemark and a personal reflection. Do repost! Comments are welcome here and by email! #nitrosyl doi.org/10.1016/j.ji...

Our latest paper on the subject is an unusual review: an interview with John Enemark and a personal epilogue on what the Enemark-Feltham formalism means today. doi.org/10.1016/j.ji...

In 2024 we extended our analysis to nonheme {FeNO}6-10 systems. We found a one-on-one mapping between the Enemark-Feltham count and the local oxidation state of the NO unit, regardless of spin state or stereochemistry! doi.org/10.1021/acs....

In 2023, we analyzed DMRG-CASSCF wave functions to derive reliable NO oxidation states in {FeNO}6-8 porphyrin complexes. Key conclusion: there’s little evidence for NO+ descriptions. doi.org/10.1021/acs....

The end of oxidation state wars in NO chemistry? Here’s a short primer: Dependjng on which functional you choose, DFT spin densities of nitrosyls are all over the place; it’s tricky to make definitive conclusions about NO oxidation states based on DFT calculations.

Here’s the latest from the #hyperporphyrin gang (pictured below at Sakrisøy, Lofoten, from last summer) – a 🇿🇦🇺🇸🇳🇴 trinational team including Jeanet Conradie, Carl Wamser & myself! The paper is part of the Trygve Helgaker Festschrift – in honor of another good friend! pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

Hey @amerchemsociety.bsky.social why not enable easier posts to 🦋 @bsky.app as you do to Facebook, X, etc.? That’d be great for @chemsky.bsky.social!

🎄🎅🎁 It’s been a good year for me and my wonderful group. I have been able to attend several conferences and visit many collaborators. Happily, I have also been able to host many exchange students and senior scholars and attend several departmental events. Many thanks to all and happy holidays! 🎁🎅🎄

The wave deformation is one of the rarest nonplanar distortions for porphyrins. We have now determined that simple Au(II) porphyrins are inherently waved, thanks to a metal-ligand orbital interaction: doi.org/10.5802/crch...

Inorganic chemists have long argued over NO oxidation states in nitrosyls. Analysis of #DMRG-CASSCF wave functions appear to provide some great insights. Check out our newest preprint: chemrxiv.org/engage/chemr...
