I design soft, romantic knitting patterns and have strong opinions about knit socks. Here you'll find yarn, tea, gardening, and a daily cheerful thing. I used to practice law, but now I'm nobody's lawyer. she/her
Ferrari fiasco aside, I thought that was a really fun season of F1.

Every once in a while someone accuses me of posting something they don’t agree with “for the likes” and I assure you it is not for the likes or for any reason other than that I am constitutionally incapable of not posting

In news that will surprise none of you, your girl got a diagnosis of mild pneumonia today. My sister told me I'm now a character in a Brontë novel. She knows me so well 🥰

(I'm fine, don't worry! I now have antibiotics and an inhaler and some strong cough syrup.)
Kidlet and I have been afflicted with the same bug, and we only have one humidifier, so I slept with her in her room last night. I woke up this morning feeling like a character in a Dickens novel who had been banished to the sickroom. It made me giggle. Maybe I'll put my hair in rag curlers tonight.
I picked up a cold that has settled into my chest, which on the one hand sucks, but on the other hand is kind of entertaining because the cracklies feel like I have Pop Rocks in my airways.

A confession: I absolutely love it when people respond to my newsletters. It feels like I shouted into a dark void and the void sent me a friendly kitten in return.

I just finished finalizing the last pattern in this year's Golden Honey Sock Club, and as happens every year, I've been hit by a little wave of feelings. Running this club is one of my favorite parts of my business, and I hope it gives others a lot of joy, too.

Time for the reminder about gifts: when you give someone a gift, that is the end of your trajectory with it. Quest over, possession transferred. They can love it and use it every day, regift it, or throw it into the ocean— and it’s none of your business anymore! A gift with conditions is not a gift.

New pet peeve unlocked: when a business that already has a two-step opt-out for their newsletters then sends you ANOTHER email telling you that you've unsubscribed and asking if it's a mistake.

No, folks. No, it's not. Nobody is unsubscribing by mistake. Stop cluttering up my inbox!

Today I picked up Little Rad and her buddy H from school. H climbed into the car and said, “Hey Lauren, I’ve been listening to this band from the 90s, have you ever heard of Korn spelled with a K?”

And friends, I want you to know I kept a straight face and treated that question with dignity.

ESPECIALLY when that advice is so obviously beginner-level that giving it implies you think the recipient is functionally incapable of parenting.

"I'm home with a sick kid, so here's a charming story."
"Have you tried keeping them warm and giving them soup?"

I swear to God.

A new, free pattern on the blog! If you'd like to learn to knit socks but are intimidated by fiddly little needles and very fine yarn, this pattern for worsted-weight socks will help you build skills without the faff. www.abeeinthebonnet.com/blog/worsted...

CW: body image stuff, but it has a happy ending.

So I’m descended from multiple branches of Midwestern farmers, and I have the build for it—broad shoulders, solid muscles, and short but strong legs. I was genetically engineered to haul things.

And I was born in 1985, which means… 1/

Hey, pocket friends! I love you all. I made two trays of pumpkin pudding and someone in my neighborhood already has the grill going. What a beautiful day.

2. It's rare for any creative, including writers, to be able to live solely off their creative income. Moreover, there is no correlation between the creative value of art and the income status of its creator. It's okay to have another gig to eat and pay bills and survive our capitalist hellscape.

Ellen Harding Baker and her Solar System Quilt are helping me feel better about taking three years to finish knitting the Mitered Square Blanket of Doom.
Ellen Harding Baker (1847-1886) was a US astronomer and teacher, known for her Solar System Quilt, used as a teaching aid in her lectures on astronomy.
She likely began creating the Solar System Quilt in 1876, and it apparently took her until 1883 to complete the project.

My husband made me a big mug of tea *and* put a coaster under it on the coffee table, and like… whew. A gem of a guy.

And it's live! I finally took my photography workshops for crafters (which I used to teach live via Zoom), recorded separate modules, and made them available for asynchronous learning. It was a real labor of love, but I'm very proud. abeeinthebonnet.thrivecart.com/craft-photog...

I have been working really hard on a project, and it's almost ready for release into the world. I put it off for literally years because I was too up in my own head about it. This year, my friend Julie and I started doing regular digital coworking sessions, and it helped me break that mental block.

I have this black leather tote I bought from Madewell back in 2014. It has led a hard life, and I've had to have the corners fully patched. At a yarny event a few years ago, someone noticed it and said, "Oh, I can tell you two have had some adventures together." It was the best compliment.
My other other conclusion is that "outfit recycling" should be the highest badge of honor in fashion and so we should STOP complimenting people for new clothes and START complimenting people who wear the same thing again.

We’re on day two of glorious rain, so we made caramel corn and put Wicked on the tv and snuggled up on the couch. I could get used to this.
