The same is generally true for the adapted political personality models. They make incorrect predictions in most cases. And the significant effects do not survive even a very liberal correction for multiple comparisons. 6/n

Third, we tested to see if effects were more likely to emerge on a set of 11 secondary ideological DVs that were less directly tied to our treatments than the primary DVs (since our respondents could have been reactive to treatment and resisted change on the primary DVs). Results are null again. 5/n

Second, we adapt political personality theories to see if conservative shift theories are more likely to make accurate predictions among individuals with certain personality profiles. We find weak evidence of any personality based individual differences in ideological responses to threat. 4/n

In three large experimental studies in the U.S., we examine the effects of three different threats on a diverse set of 16 primary and secondary ideological DVs. We find that although our threat stimuli made respondents feel threatened, they remained unchanged on *all* of the ideological DVs. 3/n

Just booked a hybrid focused writing/ hiking trip to Asheville for a few days in May. I’m so excited! Asheville was my college home and words can’t even express how much I love and miss the place. 💙 🏔️

Measuring belief systems for (arguably) the first time at the individual level of analysis, we find that identity based elements are more central to belief systems and more central elements are more stable over time. Come see our poster at 12:30 today at #SPSP2025 to learn more!

How do attitudes become moralized? We find that moral conviction spreads between connected attitudes over time. + Those with highly connected belief systems (ideologues) have highly moralized belief systems!

Come see us at the moral psych pre-con poster session @spspnews.bsky.social to learn more😃

This song absolutely hits right now

(Also, can we just all collectively appreciate the songwriting genius that is Tracy Chapman for a minute?!)

Trying to get work done this week like:
November 4, 2024 at 12:25 PM
Started off Halloweek the right way by officially moving my registration to Michigan and casting my vote to protect our democracy!

(Disclaimer: I don’t usually dress like this, but I don’t go in to work on Halloween this year so I decided to celebrate early 😬 🐈 🎃)

Then, we test whether the same pattern emerges with respect to cognitive *reflection* using project implicit data. In contrast to cognitive ability, we find that at least in this dataset, cognitive reflection is *not* predictive of attitudes towards ideological groups.
October 6, 2024 at 2:24 PM
But mixed among conservatives, with high cognitive ability conservatives expressing *more* animosity in 2012, but not in 2016. Interesting, since so little existing work has focused on the characteristics predictive of *liberals* intergroup attitudes.
October 6, 2024 at 2:17 PM
We find that those who are HIGH in cognitive ability express *more* animosity towards ideologically discordant groups, and favouritism towards ideologically concordant groups than those who are low in cognitive ability. This finding was particularly strong among *liberals*

You may be thinking, "Okay, but what if they just chose models where support for these theories was weak?" Nope. And to show how robust our results are across many reasonable alternative model specifications we conducted multiverse analyses. Things are pretty consistent. 5/n
September 3, 2024 at 10:57 PM
Individual differences in ideological responses to threats also seldom emerge, drawing political personality theories further into question. 4/n
September 3, 2024 at 10:55 PM
We find that when tested in an ecologically valid setting the effect of threat on ideology is consistently weak, and often non-significant. Moreover, threats sometimes shift people towards liberalism and the effect sizes of liberal and conservative shifts are similar. 3/n

Google search trends for "How to Register to Vote" since Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris. Obviously, this is some quick, dirty, nerdy fun that shouldn't be taken too seriously, but one thing it could be indicative of (among other things) is young voter's excitement for her candidacy.
