(8/🧵) I don't blame people for believing in the rapture, or for justifying it when it doesn't come to pass. I blame the systems that keep people feeling defeated and desperate for ANY way out, and the people who keep them oppressed by telling them that divine intervention is their only hope.

(7/🧵) For many, questioning the reality of the rapture can feel like questioning their faith wholesale, and thus questioning the only conceivable way out of their oppression. Justifying it by saying "Oh, we just got the date wrong, but it's STILL happening!" is an understandable salve for the wound.

(6/🧵) Living in that reality alone is soul crushing. But then to see your only perceived means of escape vanish, and have to question your God WHY? What did I do wrong? Why didn't you save me from this? Existential crisis doesn't even come CLOSE.

(5/🧵) People are suffering in VERY real ways; debt, medical issues, joblessness, homelessness, oppression. They're so mired in these oppressive systems, and so hopeless about their situation, they believe the only way out is divine intervention.

(4/🧵) But also, since the rapture didn't occur, many of the responses I've seen on TikTok have been heartbreaking. Many of the people excited for the rapture saw it as the only way out of their already crushing reality.

(3/🧵) Having come of age under the constant threat that the rapture could happen at any moment and at any time, and likely WOULD happen "VERY soon", I saw a LOT of people use it as a Sword of Damocles to maintain power and control over others, using the ever present immediacy as a pressure tactic.

(2/🧵) I'm not going to be one of the "mockers and scoffers". There are plenty of others making fun of these people already. I want to say how deeply my heart BREAKS for these people.

Shocker that their huge-dollar-donor funded retreat came up with this idea!
