And further on - LRD, a replacement for the L-Band HRPT older generations provided, was cut later on following further budget cuts a few years ago.

Those are also the reason NOAA-20 is using the same experimental bus as Suomi NPP, which has several design issues...

This decision followed a wide change of policy at EUMETSAT where they began slowly becoming a lot more closed than they used to be.

As of now, only the Russian METEORs operate LRPT, and people will have to rely on that now.

A little before, MetOp-A had also launched with plans to operate a compatible LRPT service, but after some technical issues it was disabled - and due to a "lack of users" (on a service that did not exist yet...) - they decided to scrap it on future ones.

It was initially planned to be on the new generation - as a new digital mode named "LRPT" instead of APT. However, that was back with the NPOESS program that had a much larger scope than the current JPSS program.

NPOESS got drastic budget cuts, and LRPT went with it.

As of now there is only VCID 8/9 present, that is instrument and spacecraft telemetry, previously on S-Band which now looks quite empty.

Unfortunately no L-Band though... But it should be rather nice on X-Band. Just a bit too wide for many.

That article is quite a bit off though... And sensitive stuff is already encrypted.
