It had been an offhand comment, born at the conclusion of another in a seemingly endless string of crises in Roboute's newly resurrected life. "I wish I could just be a babe again for a little while," he had sighed. "Hm," said Severus Agemman, the only other person in the room. Roboute felt his face warm. Agemman was a serious man, grizzled and Grey the way few of the Ultramarines lived long enough to become. He spoke little, but Roboute knew how attentive he could be. Just that little hum from the man meant he was listening to every word as if it held the weight of a hundred worlds. Roboute's heart quailed at the thought. For a moment, he wished his words didn't mean so much. That he could open up his status and step out of it like a set of power armor. That he could just rest, body and soul. He was so, so very tired. "Disregard that statement, Agemman. I am only complaining," Roboute said. He tried to smile. "A few hours of sleep and I will be myself." Agemman nodded. "Understood, sir." Perhaps Agemman was already thinking of something, then. The few words he spoke were chosen with the careful precision that he assigned his Veteran Marines to their squads. If he had truly meant to disregard Roboute's casual complaint, he would have said so. But it wasn't "Yes, sir." or "Disregarded, sir." It was "Understood, sir." But then, Roboute was too tired to catch that subtle difference. "Thank you, Agemman," he said. "You are dismissed for the day. Get some sleep." "Yes, sir," said Agemman. After that, they went their separate ways. Roboute had no idea what would be waiting for him the following day.

Believe it or not, I started very briefly as a setleth main! My first fe3h fic was disorganized and misses a lot of details, as I hadn't even played through my first full run yet, but it's still my most kudosed fe3h fic!

Edwin told the Strike Force that he was a man shortly before they marched to Fhirdiad. He thought he could wait. He had contingencies with Hubert should their mission fail, including final wishes in letters to Dimitri and Claude. But, as the day grew closer, he finally accepted that it was important to him that at least those closest to him know. It felt selfish and frivolous, when his most important mission was on the horizon, but all it really amounted to was a short meeting. “That’s our Emperor, calling us all to the War Room to announce that he’s a man,” Linhardt yawned. “I agree it seems more suited to a social room,” Ferdinand quipped. “I’ll appreciate you not criticizing how His Majesty chooses to discuss personal matters,” Hubert growled. Ferdinand rolled his eyes. “I only mean that this is a cause for celebration! Please, let us all adjourn to the gardens, I have a most wonderful tea for such an occasion—” “His Majesty will celebrate if and when he decides to—” Edwin rubbed two fingers between his eyebrows. “You are all dismissed,” he said. “We will all meet here tomorrow morning to discuss marching orders.” Everyone filed out, offering various congratulations. Caspar invited him to train sometime. Linhardt heavily insinuated that they would talk soon. Ferdinand and Hubert were still arguing. Bernie dodged out, avoiding his eye. Lorenz offered tips on being a gentleman before Sylvain interrupted him. Then, at the end of the line, there was Felix. Hubert had doubts about letting Felix into the Strike Force, all of which Edwin understood. Felix was as Faerghan as they came, heir to the family closest and most loyal to the throne, practically legendary in their devotion. He had grown up attached at the hip with the Prince, had even been betrothed to him. There were rumours that the betrothal had ended because Felix entered the social scene as a man and not a woman, but those rumours came largely from Adrestian nobles who enjoyed thinking themselves more enlightened than their northern neighbors. Edwin had a full mausoleum that proved otherwise. No, Edwin suspected that Felix had ended the betrothal himself after whatever falling out he and Dimitri had, what with him loudly and repeatedly announcing it to anyone who listened. And, even Hubert agreed that Felix had neither the motive nor the ability to pretend such a thing. Whatever had happened between the two of them, it was enough to undo not only a lifetime bond, but also Felix’s loyalty to his own nation. So, Felix joined the Strike Force, and after the meeting where Edwin announced his new name, he awkwardly sidled up to Edwin to speak. Or, try to. Felix swallowed twice, but he remained silent. “Yes, Felix?” Edwin asked. Felix startled, a strange thing for him to do. “I,” he mumbled. “I know a barber in Derdriu.” It took Edwin a moment to realize that Felix meant a barber-surgeon. He couldn’t help but smile a little. “Thank you, Felix,” he said. That seemed to snap the man out of his strange behaviour, because his perpetual scowl returned to his face. “And don’t take poppywort,” he added gruffly. “It’ll give you jaundice.” “Thank you, Felix,” Edwin said again, a bit confused. “I am sure Linhardt will present the best options to me.” “I’m just saying,” Felix snapped. “My healer didn’t know anything and I—” His mouth clicked shut, and his cheeks went pink. “Anyway.” Normally, Felix would have spit out some insult and stomped off by then, but he stayed put. Edwin suddenly wondered how many other men like them Felix had met. “Felix,” Edwin said, bemused by the situation at hand as well as what he was about to ask. “Would you like to join me for some tea?”

It took the two of them, but Dimitri is finally asleep, and Felix and Dedue step out of the royal chambers and into the hallway with relief. Felix sighs, running a hand through his hair. A few flyaways spring back the moment his hand leaves them. There's a line developing in his brow, deepened by his consternation with his King. It is a feeling Dedue is very familiar with. Felix is quite beautiful, has always been, but for some reason, in the dim torchlight, he is suddenly striking. Hm.
