I quite liked him on Reply All, and still enjoy some of his new show. The one comparing ADHD meds to just "taking speed" left a bit of a bad taste (as someone whose life was massively changed for the better by getting the right ADHD meds...)

This is so heartbreaking. It's so understandable that someone who had that experience would be desperate for another way - which in turn leaves them so vulnerable to even more harm from grifters like this who prey on that desperation.

But yeah, good point about other dictators. I guess the suave charmer is an easy convenient Hollywood trope, but you're right that it doesn't seem to play out that way in reality. More often, it's pathetic aging dudes with an undying belief that the world owes them more than they got.

Believe it or not, I don't think I had ever heard of Donald Trump before he first ran for president. (I'm a Canadian and I've never seen Home Alone 2, so maybe that's my excuse?) I can only imagine how much weirder it would have felt to see all this happening if he has already been on my radar.

Same. When I imagined the possibility of fascism catching hold in the US, I (like many) pictured some kind of sky charismatic evil, sharp suit and a handsome smile, charming half the country until he could eventually drop the mask. Not a tacky, slovenly, unkempt octogenarian pervert.
