An atomic physicist ⚛️ by training, I also train the olympic lifts 🏋🏼. I build quantum computers 🔮, previously lidar at Waymo 🚓. Also previously a rockstar 🎸. Climate curious
This part of Whoop is super lame. It claims that doing NDSR (hybrid meditation/nap) has a negative impact on recovery for me. I think this is likely not causation but a correlation - I do this when I'm whipped so no wonder it correlates with poor recovery. 👏Correlation 👏 is 👏 not 👏 causation, Whoop

Google Opinion Rewards has some wild options when it asks where I've been recently. Today, it asked if I went to "Van's pig stands". I didn't. But maybe I should. Does Van have a pig that stands on its hind legs? Does Van sell statues of pigs that hold signs? Must sniff around and report back.

Fun fact: I share that birthday with Hubble. Coolest part about my birthday
Happy birthday to the Hubble Space Telescope, launched from the Kennedy Space Center #OTD in 1990. Here's to a remarkable 35 years of imaging the Cosmos. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️

Leave your favorite Hubble images in the replies!

Science needs your help! The NIST Atomic Spectroscopy group is at risk of being laid off. This team is a quiet lynchpin for so many corners of hard tech across medical, defense, energy, semiconductors, and indeed #QuantumComputing. This isn't political, it's an American interest

Been thinking a lot about global population decline recently. Family homes become a worse investment. Economies need to finally allow their workers breathing room to raise kids. Does AI improve per-capita productivity enough to make up for population loss? Who are the leading thinkers here?

I just got the inside scoop on this @natphys.nature.com work from Chitose at JILA last week. Lots of neat tools to add to the atom interferometry belt. Can't wait to dig in!

Hamiltonian engineering of collective XYZ spin models in an optical cavity
Hamiltonian engineering of collective XYZ spin models in an optical cavity - Nature Physics
Spin models that can be emulated by quantum simulators are usually restricted to systems with conserved total magnetization. The tuning of photon-mediated interactions between atoms in a cavity enable...

Tariff Tuesday story: I need to buy some custom parts. We got some quotes from the US and some from China. Even with a 125% tariff, the Chinese parts are still cheaper. So we, a US company, are just incentivized to flush 125% cost down the toilet. Still trying to piece together how this helps...

My son (1.5) really loves typing on my keyboard. He sauntered into my office this morning and assigned me a new action item in some meeting notes:

" edsdsdcrdcZD. ZAZX≈≈  C CJM VRF3 AEFV V "

Still working to clarify the definition of done so I can draft an action plan.

Just a PSA to remind you that laser cooling of atoms is so badass. A colleague snapped a shot of my lecture on Magneto Optical Traps and Raman Sideband Cooling. Atoms 👏 are 👏 so 👏 fun 👏

I've done my fair share of experimentation with the ol chemex at home, but it's extra "illuminating" to take it all the way to silica beads and lasers. Doing the important science, for actionable life advice. Count me in for those high-velocity laminar flows!

Quantum computers have complex global supply chains. Piecing together the impact of tarriffs on the whole QC industry is going to be ... interesting

Stoked to start my journey on Bluesky! I followed @seanmcarroll.bsky.social here and love the lively discussion I see. I'm looking forward to learning from you all, answers to the deep questions like: wait, why do my people care about the Kardashians again?
